Dallapiccola is an unsung hero. His life story shines through with his integrity and humanity; his works more often than not touch on vital human issues; and his music holds firm to some key melodic principles which not all his contemporaries saw fit to respect. This disc is a good place in which to sample his world.

The Canti di Prigionia fall into his early maturity, with both the vocal lines and the instrumentation being relatively natural and easy to follow. This moving music is performed here to high standard and with evident enthusiasm.

The three fine groups of the Liriche Greche are much more restricted, even Webernian, with thin exposed lines being written for soprano and supporting instrumentalists alike. But that restraint of means does not hold Dallapiccola back - there is plenty of passion and beauty in these spare settings of poetry that is sometimes sombre, sometimes unbuttoned, always engaging. The Italian translations that are set make no effort to match the distinctive metre of the originals (the heavy-footed Alcaic would sit uncomfortably in modern Italian), but especially the five Sappho fragments feel true to the emotional world of the original. Julie Moffat's unhurried and elegant voice is beautifully clearly recorded and comes over very happily.

There's quite a gap then from the Greek lyric pieces, all written somehow during the War, to the two unaccompanied mixed choruses of 1970-1, by which time Dallapiccola was 66 (he died in 1975). The New London Chamber Choir sing them with wonderful clarity and conviction, and understandably so - they are fine pieces.

It's almost a perversity that the disc is rounded off with two early (1933) choruses in a quasi-madrigalian style.

I’m glad I bought this CD, but I doubt I will buy another work by this composer. It just simply wasn’t to my taste. That said, I will give it another couple of plays, but I am not holding my breath.

Although superficially this music seems to have the same open textures as, say, Arvo Part or John Tavener this really belongs more to the IRCAM Berio and Boulez school. An extra star to Warner for having Italian texts in the booklet (but not the English translations included in the Eisler and Loewe lieder reissues in the same Apex series).
