Product Description

Product Description

This publication presents the entire painted oeuvre of Salvador Dali (1904-1989). After many years of research, Robert Descharnes and Gilles Neret finally located all the paintings of this highly prolific artist. Many of the works had been inaccessible for years - in fact so many that almost half the illustrations in this book have rarely been seen. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Robert Descharnes, a photographer and writer, has published studies of major artists, among them Antoni Gaudi and Auguste Rodin. Since 1950, he has been documenting and cataloguing Dali's paintings and writings, and is now considered the leading expert on the artist. Shortly before Dali's death, Descharnes was appointed by him to take charge of the rights to his works, within the Societe Demart Pro Arte B.V., of which Descharnes is president. Gilles Neret was an art historian, journalist, writer, and museum correspondent. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU museum and the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He directed art reviews such as L'Oeil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Elie Faure Prize in 1981 for his publications. Neret is the editor of TASCHEN'S catalogues raisonnes of the works of Monet and Velazquez, as well as the author of Dali The Paintings and Erotica Universalis. He died on August 3, 2005. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all Dali enthusiasts. Encyclopaedic!, 16 July 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Dali: The Paintings (Paperback)
This book is nothing short of excellent. It is by far the best reference work I have ever seen. It shows his paintings from 1914 onwards through his transitional dalliances into Impressionism, Cubism, Pointilism, Futurism and Purism and beyond until it reaches his last painting in 1983. Alongside the paintings are superbly well written descriptions of that particular period in time. The book also includes many photographs of Dali, his family and the artist at work.

It is more than an omnium gatherum as you might expect from a large reference book. It is extremely well thought out and put together in a pleasing and easy to follow manner. Second to none.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money, 27 Nov 2000

This review is from: Dali (Art in Hand) (Paperback)
This book is excellent value for money. It was one of the first books I bought on Dali and it is a great introduction and overview of his life and his paintings. The book does not go into great depth or give great insights into the artists mind but it briefly highlights the main events in his life, also describing the different phases he went through and how these affected his painting. I found it very useful as an introductory text and as a reference guide. I reccomend it to the dali novice as it provides you with a framework and background that you can build on through reading the artists own writings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dali, 29 Jun 2009

I'm not an artist, nor do I know about art, but having to teach Dali to 7 year olds in arts week, this book came in very useful! There were obviously some images in the bokk unsuitable for children, but it gave me the basics.
