3.0 out of 5 stars Good instalment, poor series end 31 Dec 2004
By Jane Aland VINE VOICE
A difficult item to review this: The Future is the final chapter in the 6-part Dalek Empire 3, and as a piece of drama in itself is a return to form after the appalling waste of time that was the previous chapter, with a pitched battle on Velyshaa between the Daleks and the Graxis Wardens, Siy Tarkov, Galanar and Elaria leading to a final confrontation between Galanar and the Dalek Supreme. The final confrontation is a particular delight, with some strong material about the two sides becoming more like each other in order to win the war.
Less satisfying is the shape of Dalek War 3 as a whole, as revealed by this last instalment. The entire series is now revealed as a holding exercise for Dalek Empire 4, with Siy Tarkov's mission to get information on the Daleks back to the Galactic Union being strung out over 6 CDs, while we never get to hear the outcome. A retelling of Power of the Daleks on an epic scale, Dalek Empire 3 is easily the least impressive of the series, being overlong, with a lack of focus, messy scripting, and bland characters. If Dalek Empire 4 ever materialises this may well become essential listening, but as a story on it's own Dalek Empire 3 fails miserably.

*Warning, contains plot spoilers*

First released in 2004, this is the final episode of the third season of audio releases to feature the Daleks and no Doctor.

This episode picks up directly from the fifth in the season. All the separate story lines are now merged into one frantic race to Velyshaa and the records of Karlendorf (you will need to listen to seasons 1 and 2 to get the full significance). This is a thrilling non-stop actioner that builds towards an inevitable climax. It explores just what it is to be human or dalek, and events wind towards a seemingly final, dark conclusion. But just as you think all is lost there is a ray of hope. This episode brings the series full circle in a stunning fashion. The ending is dark and bleak, but the bitter taste is sweetened somewhat by that little ray of optimism at the end.

It's a thunderingly good wrap up to the series, the only shortcoming is that it is not a stand alone release, you really need to listen to all the others in the series to get the full story. It's a single disc release, and clocks in at just over an hour. I love the sixties retro artwork, there is a feeling that this has been produced by people like me for people like me - people with a love of good design, a reverence for the Daleks and a sense of style. Excellent, 5 stars.
