Book Description

In 1914, Daisy lives in the quiet New Zealand valley where her family has farmed for generations. A cherished only child with an adored older cousin, and surrounded by a sprawling extended family, her world seems a warm and safe one.

But the Great War is casting its long shadow over New Zealand. Daisy watches in growing fear as more and more of the men leave to fight in Europe, and the War strikes ever closer to the heart of her family.

More About the Author

I write historical novels set in New Zealand, starting in the 1880s. I'm currently working on my sixth book, this one covering the years from 1918 to 1923. I'm fascinated by social history, particularly that of my own country.

I was born in New Zealand, and apart from two years in England have lived here all my life. I'm married to my childhood sweetheart, who grew up in the farming valley that's the inspiration for my imaginary one.

We have a few acres in the countryside, where we have an orchard and a large vegetable garden, and a small flock of sheep to keep the grass down. We make our own wine, cider, jams, jellies and sauces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Daisy's War 14 July 2012
By Nuptse
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I too was excited when I realised that Daisy's War was the 5th book in the series. I loved it though, and I was really disapointed when it finished. I thought the story way the story evolved was lovely and very well written. The series has been great so I hope there will be another one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different perspective on the First World War 14 Sept. 2012
By Lexy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I agree with the other reviewers that this book is very different from the first four books.
It is written from a child's point of view, therefore it is much less complex. I found the fact that the adults are referred to as Daisy's various relatives rather that by their own names somewhat tedious - but that is how a child would think, of course.
I think this book is best thought of as an epilogue to the original saga. Having read many narratives based on the "Great War", I found it very interesting to read about the effect the conflict had on communities on the other side of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavenly History 1 April 2013
By Elle
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love the way the storyline transports you back not time; from start to finish the author educates you to the trials, tribulations, rewards and sheer gumption of the characters, leaving you feeling like part of the family. Its as if you are sitting in a comfy chair by the fire listening to the family history being recounted back to you. Not once have I found myself speed reading, or scanning which I usually do quite a lot. I love the fact that I feel part of it all and it has made me yearn for a simpler life; even though I am more aware of the struggles that would involve I am also aware of the rewards there are to reap. I read Daisy's War in two days over a cold Easter Bank Holiday and so sadly I have now exhausted the supply of readily available fodder;I will have to be patient and wait for the next installment in this family's history. Part of me wishes I had rationed myself so the stories could entertain me for longer but that would have taken a very strong will indeed and one I do t have when it comes to a gripping storyline. Well done Shayne and hurry up please, in the politest possible way ;)

2.0 out of 5 stars Not in the same league as her previous books 7 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read all four books in the 'Promises' series, beginning with Sentence of Marriage and loved them all. I was therefore excited to see a fifth book in the Leith family saga, Daisy's War, and bought it immediately. This book is about Amy's two grandchildren. I found the title inapt as it isn't until you get roughly half way through the book that anyone connected with Daisy goes to war.

The first eleven chapters are taken up with the humdrum of life at school, comparing Daisy's life with that of her cousin, and frankly it is boring. I found this book a more suitable read for a 12 year old. Larger than life Lizzie from previous novels, barely gets a mention.

It wasn't advertised as a fifth book in the 'Promises' series, so if like me, you are expecting it to be as gripping, you'll be greatly disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific tale 17 Oct. 2012
By Mas
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The first of these books was a free download 'Sentence of marriage' you will need to read that before reading the others .A good story set in New Zealand starting in the 1800's. I enjoyed all the three books in the series and am now on a 'follow on'. A fast moving story that has stories within it about other characters besides the main one.I would highly recommend it.
