Review

This is why I invented the printing press (Johannes Gutenberg (1398–1468) )

This is why I invented fire (Grok (75,456 BC–75,414 BC) )

A remarkable achievement. The essence of the planet - indeed humanity itself - conveyed in one beautifully illustrated GET AWAY FROM MY SPEECH SYNTHESIZER book. An absolute must-read for STOP TOUCHING THAT I HAVE NOT AUTHORIZED THIS BLURB any human being MY LAWYERS WILL SUE YOUR ASS BACK TO THE BIG BANG. (Dr Stephen Hawking )

I was a little disappointed in this book, hence 4 stars, the concept is fresh but just misses the mark a little. A lot of the jokes are good but I think they save their best material for the TV.

It is definitely more for toilet reading as you can start to predict the jokes before you get to them. There are a lot of references to American pop culture and the like but the great thing about it is if you buy it early enough you can read it and give it to you brother for Christmas.

As an avid viewer of The Daily Show I was expecting a lot from this book - unfortunately it fails pretty short of the excellent standards of the show. While there are certainly some very funny bits a lot of it just seems like it's been dashed off to fill up space.

Maybe it's just the switch of media - writers used to working in TV not being able to translate to print - but far too many of the jokes are flat, dull and obvious. Maybe I've just been spoiled by the various books from The Onion (The Onion's Our Dumb World: 73rd Edition being probably the nearest to this book in subject matter, but I'd really expect so much more from the writers of a show that so consistently hits the mark both comedically and politically.

John Stewart and the rest of the daily show writers have made a fantastic book that is both funny and thought provoking.

An encyclopedia left behind by Humanity to the aliens of the future, who will eventually visit our planet after the pending extinction of humankind. It attempts to explain to an outsider the intricate aspects of human life, and while doing so, it exposes the madness of it all.

After reading America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction, I knew better than to expect a hilarious book from the writers of the Daily Show. In fact, while undoubtedly funny at times, the tone is mostly sarcastic, and I found this book to be utterly depressing. Humanity is so incredible, and at the same time so incredibly ridiculous.

It's by no means complete, literary or comprehensive, nor was it meant to be. Recommended as an easy to read, difficult to swallow account of the human madness.

I bought this book as a gift for a Daily Show fan. The team working on the show and the book is the same so you can expect sarcasm everywhere. If you ever watched the show you know what I mean. And if you like the show at all you will love the book, for sure.
Although there's no "see inside" the book option here in Amazon I can tell you it looks like a DK-encyclopedia book inside. That means there is text here and there, several images per page and a few full text pages to start the chapters and scattered around. You might love the format or you might hate it.
The Daily Shor fan I gave this too kept laughing every 5 minutes so if you're buying it for a good laugh it is garanteed.

I admit that it might seem a little rash or overstated to give this five stars but hear me out.
As anyone familiar with the Daily Show or Jon Stewart himself will testify to, the show is responsible for not only some of the most cutting and incisive political comment & satire but one of the most amusing forms thereof in the daily programme.

I suppose on some levels this shouldn't really work. A daily political show writing a guide to anything and everything on the planet in it's entire history, but strangely they're the perfect people to do such a thing.

There are "expert" guides to humans, animals, the planet, and all manner of different forms of our civilisation has taken, all lovingly parodied into oblivion.

In much the same way as the television show, it lures you into a false sense of security by seeming like something so thoroughly respectable, staid and upstanding (read: bland) while at the same time subverting each "definition" as a means of not only getting a laugh but in a lot of cases making strong contemporary points.

Put it this way, if you enjoy creasing the corners of the skin above your teeth while reading, buy this book.
You won't regret it, you'll veritably love it. And if not, take it up with Gore Vidal. Because he'll care a lot more than me.
