Book Description

21 Sep 2010

Where do we come from? Who created us? Why are we here? These are questions that have sporadically interested people since the dawn of time, but whose answers have continually eluded us. Now in their new book, Jon Stewart and The Daily Show writing staff (who include the team behind The Onion) tackle them and many more with their trademark wit, irreverence and intelligence. They will take us on an intellectual journey through time - a quest back to the very moment of creation - that will maybe, just maybe help us figure out exactly how and why everything got so irretrievably f****ed up.

From applications for genetic reconstitution by aliens to the meanings of anatomy, gender or nourishment, every aspect of life on this planet is reexplored, reexamined and made newly hilarious in this book.

This is why I invented the printing press (Johannes Gutenberg (1398–1468) )

This is why I invented fire (Grok (75,456 BC–75,414 BC) )

A remarkable achievement. The essence of the planet - indeed humanity itself - conveyed in one beautifully illustrated GET AWAY FROM MY SPEECH SYNTHESIZER book. An absolute must-read for STOP TOUCHING THAT I HAVE NOT AUTHORIZED THIS BLURB any human being MY LAWYERS WILL SUE YOUR ASS BACK TO THE BIG BANG. (Dr Stephen Hawking )

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as much punch as the TV Show 24 Nov 2010
By Chris
Format:Hardcover
I was a little disappointed in this book, hence 4 stars, the concept is fresh but just misses the mark a little. A lot of the jokes are good but I think they save their best material for the TV.

It is definitely more for toilet reading as you can start to predict the jokes before you get to them. There are a lot of references to American pop culture and the like but the great thing about it is if you buy it early enough you can read it and give it to you brother for Christmas.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 5 Jun 2011
By Bill D
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
As an avid viewer of The Daily Show I was expecting a lot from this book - unfortunately it fails pretty short of the excellent standards of the show. While there are certainly some very funny bits a lot of it just seems like it's been dashed off to fill up space.

Maybe it's just the switch of media - writers used to working in TV not being able to translate to print - but far too many of the jokes are flat, dull and obvious. Maybe I've just been spoiled by the various books from The Onion (The Onion's Our Dumb World: 73rd Edition being probably the nearest to this book in subject matter, but I'd really expect so much more from the writers of a show that so consistently hits the mark both comedically and politically.

John Stewart and the rest of the daily show writers have made a fantastic book that is both funny and thought provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars The usual Jon Stewart magic
His is one of the few TV shows I even bother watching and try to never miss an episode, even though I am an UKian and not an USAian. The book is as amusing and wry as his show.
