A necessary evil 2 Jun 2011

This is a very good book of its type (it obviously does not deal with off-shore tax havens/shelters!!) and is very useful for quick reference for the average taxpayer

Up to about 10 years ago I filled in an annual tax return, first on paper then using the online system. Fortunately HMRC exempted me from doing this after a few years because my affairs were pretty simple and dealt with through PAYE. However, in the last tax year I wanted to provide HMRC with more information but I was a bit worried about just going back into the online system after so long. I wanted a refresher about the system for filing your return as well as specific information that you need before starting, particularly regarding CGT.
I looked at tax guides in the shops and read extracts from Amazon to try and compare those available. The main problem was trying to identify those guides which could give useful general information regarding filing and some detailed help on specifics but in a clear and easily understood format. Some guides are very detailed and more suited to professionals and others too simplistic and general.
I think Jane Vass has managed to write a guide which ticks most of the boxes I was looking for. She gives a good overview of the system and your obligations regarding information required and the deadlines. She then goes through the various sections of the return in reasonable but not too complicated detail. There are examples of likely scenarios to be encountered using copies of the forms.
By reading through it before attempting my return it gave me confidence that I knew what was required before I started and that I would be able to get help on specific issues from HMRC. There is a helpfull "Fact File" at the back which lists useful phone numbers and the various help sheets available for HMRC.
Overall, I would recommend this guide as good value for anyone filling out their own return who wants some "hand-holding".

This book, along with its predecessors, is an ideal companion to check out your tax situation and make sure the thieving magpies from HRMC don't overcharge you.
Excellent value.
