More About the Author

As a journalist, Les Picker has cruised on a nuclear attack submarine deep in the Pacific Ocean and has climbed the highest peak in the Pyrenes. He has withstood -50-degree Fahrenheit temperatures photographing in the Arctic and survived +120-degree Fahrenheit temperatures living with a Bedouin tribe in Egypt's Eastern desert. He was nearly bitten by a sea lion in the Galapagos (never stand between a mother and her pup while photographing!) and was chased by a 16-foot alligator in South Africa. His tripod and camera were carried off into the Arctic tundra by a curious Grizzly.

Les has more than 600 writing and photo credits in publications that include National Geographic publications, Better Homes & Gardens, Forbes, Time, Inc., Money, and dozens of others. In 2011 Les was named Best Travel Photographer in the prestigious Canada Northern Lights Award.

While a well-known travel writer and photographer, Les is also passionate about his fiction writing. He has written two works of historical fiction and two of general fiction.

The First Pharaoh is the lead book in The First Dynasty Series. It follows the life, loves and adventures of the first Pharaoh, King Narmer (also known as Menes), the man who unified Upper and Lower Egypt into one rule that lasted for 3,000 years. Anhotek, Narmer's scribe, Vizier and personal shaman, protects Narmer throughout his early years, even from the destructive influence of Narmer's own father, King Scorpion. Through loves, wars and palace intrigue, The First Pharaoh tells the story of a real-life king who created a dynasty that became perhaps the most admired civilization the world has ever known.

In the second book in the series, The Dagger of Isis, we follow the young girl, Mery, as she matures, marries King Wadjet and births him a son and heir to the throne. After Wadjet's tragic death, Mery is crowned King and becomes Meryt-Neith. Serving as her son's regent for 17 years, Meryt-Neith must struggle against the wiles of her cousin who plots to place herself on the throne. She must also battle invading armies and keep her secret love affair from prying eyes. .

The final book of the series will be published in 2013.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visiting an ancient time with an expert guide 30 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This author is able to parachute you into a time so ancient it's difficult to even imagine the span of time between then and now. It is the second in a series of three and recounts the story of the great grand-daughter of the legendary founder of the kingdom of the two lands, which is now called Egypt. She is referred to as Mery in the narrative, and also the masculine Meryt when she becomes Pharoah, regent for her baby son. It's often said that a good story needs a good villain, and this story certainly has that.

2.0 out of 5 stars not a patch on others in this genre 9 Dec 2013

Until recently this was a new historical era for me but found, quite by chance, neffertiti by Michele Moran and became hooked on Egyptian historical fiction reading every book I could find by that author and others. I came upon the dagger of isis during one of my raids on amazon kindle. I was impressed by the reviews on this and other titles by Lester Picker so bought it and settled down in anticipation. I must be missing something because I found this book really hard work. None of the main characters had any depth or enough substance to really draw me in. There seemed to be large sections where nothing really moved on and I found myself tempted to just abandon the book I did however persevere to the end but will not be reading any of the other titles I had already added to my wish list.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read 24 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Mr Picker shows a deep understanding of ancient Egyptian culture and weaves it seamlessly into his story telling. I found the concept of the story being told by the two female protagonists interesting - a clear reflection of the modern saying that `one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter'. Whilst the pace is not as fast as that of `The First Pharaoh' (the first in the trilogy), it is still a gripping story and I look forward to reading the final book.
