Marvin The Martian has built the Ultimate Weapon to destroy the Earth. But there's one small problem: Ultimate Weapons require a lot of energy that Marvin doesn't have. So he sends out his minions to search for energy atoms. It's up to Duck Dodgers, saviour of the Universe (and master klutz), to stop Marvin before he collects enough atoms to make his diabolical plan a success.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Duck Dodgers"-An almost great game., 4 Dec 2000

Does anyone remember that Warner Brothers cartoon/sci-fi series from the 60's, starring Daffy Duck and Marvin the Martian? Didn't think so. It was called "Duck Dodgers" and even though I wasn't around back then, I have seen repeats of it. So when I realised Infogrames was going to release a N64 title based on the cartoon, I immediately saw the potential. After months of drooling over crystal-clear screenshots and reading endless positive previews, I was the happiest person in Britain when "Duck Dodgers" was finally launched back in October. However, after all the anticipation, I discovered after a few hours play that it wasn't such a great game. First of all, there's the extremely awkward camrera angles. The camera can't be manually controlled, so you'll just have to persevere with it. How can you perfectly time one of many jumps when the camera is positioned directly behind Daffy's head though? The only other grumble is that it's too easy to complete. You may consider this good value for money and you will occassionally return for more. Yet, there's still a lot of tedious backtracking to find crystals. If you've played Rayman 2, you'll find this game quite similar. Also Loony Tunes fans will be disappointed that the late, Mel Blanc couldn't have voiced the characters but the voices aren't bad anyway. Yet there are far more positive points than negative. Some of the animations, cutscenes and quotes come right from the cartoon. These range from Daffy holding up a "See Ya" sign just as he's about to die, to his legs wriggling rapidly as he slips on oil. You'll never tire of watching these humorous animations. The graphics are beautiful and are saturated with colour. There are many vast areas to explore and there's loads of mini-games such as rat racing, basketball, jumping pipes, roaming around a maze and even boxing! Another great feature is the Penny Arcade where you can play Pong on a coin-op, a test-your-strength machine and a shooting gallery!

So, if you can manage to ignore the frustrating camera, "Duck Dodgers" can be an extemely rewarding platform game. You've got to believe that with just a little more effort, "Duck Dodgers" could've been excellent. But what other game allows to play boxing, basketball, Pong and rat racing, all for the price of one! And in the words of Daffy Duck, this game is definitely not, "Despicable"!
