Despite some of reviews documenting terrible experiences with this device I went and bought one anyway because of its great value. I have a servicable headset but the 3.5mm jacks on motherboard are playing up and I wanted to try to 'fix' the problem at a reasonable cost. The device arrived with 36 hours of placing the order which is great for a start since delivery was free.

I'm running Windows XP SP3. When I plugged in the device it loaded the USB drivers for headset, audio device and human input device without any problem. The headphone jack had to be pushed in pretty hard to have it seat properly but apart from that it's been great. I've used the device with a range of software including Windows Media Player, GotoMeeting, Eyebeam VoIP softphone and, of course, Windows itself. In your case, if the software you want to use doesn't allow you to select an alternative audio device, you may need to use the Windows control applet to select the device as the Windows default audio device. Also, one review mentioned that the microphone didn't work. There are buttons on the device to mute either the microphone or the headphones so I'm wondering if the microphone was left muted.

I'm leaving this fairly detailed message because there are some really negative reviews that don't match my experience, reviews that will probably put others off what seems to be a good value device. If the device was really so bad as the other reviwers report, presumably they'd first return it and get a replacement, one that does work rather than leave possibly unrepresentative comments. Of course, you never know the affliations and motivations of those leaving comments which, I suppose, is true for me too but I hope you sense I'm a user that is, so far, pleased with his purchase.

Verified Purchase
I bought this USB Sound Card Adapter as a way of connecting my computer to my stereo after the 3.5mm output jack on the laptop stopped working when the end of a headphone lead broke off inside it. On first listen the sound of this adapter seemed like utter crap, but I'll explain... Unfortunately the product seems aimed at creating a sort of virtual 3D sound environment for games etc, which means that my plain ordinary stereo MP3s come out sounding like the musicians are playing in an echo chamber/in someone's bathroom/down a well. Having said that, the product itself is fairly well put together, though probably not the most robust object in the world, and the sound quality is OK if you don't mind pseudo-surround effects. The problem for me is that there appears to be no way to disable the 7.1 channel effects and just use the thing as a straight sound card replacement. To be honest I wasn't expecting much for a fiver so I wasn't unduly dissappointed, and it's back to the drawing board to try to find a solution to my non-working output jack

This product Will break!!! and in a very short time. I did manage to fix mine with a bit of cellotape and some soldering but it is annoying (There is a pic of it). It does work just about and does the job but I wouldn't recommend this product.

I don't really bother writing reviews but I just thought I should share my views on this item. When I first opened it, I noticed small scratches & fingerprints on the underside(I was holding either side of it & hadn't even touched the underneath)& it was a bit dirty around the M USB connector but I just assumed that it may have been tested before dispatch or something but I'm starting to think it's a returned item. It seemed to work at first but after a second try it started to override my main sound card despite being configured separately & I just couldn't get it to function correctly with Vista 32bit, depite trying every setting I could think of & trying to find info on this card is near impossible. That's not the worst the thing, every time you plug in or unplug the thing, it makes either your headphones or speakers pop with static. This happens if it's muted(or just turned down all the way via the card's button's, whether the onboard card is muted or even when the PC's in sleep mode & it's ruined my Sony Wifi Digital I'face speakers(that were obviously connected via 3.5mm M jack to jack lead). My speaker's now distort & vibrate, also my Sony headphones have started to crackle intermittently which is frustrating. Amazon have offered a refund upon receipt of the item but unfortunately couldn't point me in the right direction of any config/set up info, so I guess I better return it. I've had to buy new monitor speaker's & a better USB card(both from Amazon)& my advice to other's considering this is not to bother, save your money, add to it & buy a decent card that doesn't destroy your other hardware, cos it's really not worth it!

Oh yeah, one more thing, don't watch the Vid review as I did, cos you might end up buying this card & totally regretting it,j ust like me(D'oh)!
