Amazon.co.uk Review

Five fine episodes of the evergreen Home Guard sitcom here. Dad's Army endures because it combines a healthy dollop of self-mockery with a sense of pride in Britain's lonely defiance against Hitler's might in 1940, encapsulated in the pompous and incompetent yet courageous Captain Mainwaring. Arthur Lowe is sublime in this role. Though he generally acts as a foil to his flippant platoon of funny stereotypes (Walker, Frazier, Godfrey, etc.), his subtle double-takes and apoplectic facial expressions of exasperation are endlessly hilarious. Corporal Jones' doddery recklessness can generally be relied upon to culminate in a finale involving trousers, cries of "Don't panic!" and chases across country but the masterstroke of this series was the casting against type of John Le Mesurier as the vague, aristocratic Sergeant and Lowe as his military but not social superior. These episodes include "The Day The Balloon Went Up" (a typically frantic caper involving a stray barrage balloon), "The Two And A Half Feathers" (including a wonderful Jonesy flashback to his days in the Sudan) and "The Deadly Attachment", in which Pike cheeks the captain of a captive U-Boat crew, who demands his name to add to his "list" of insolent Englanders. "Don't tell him, Pike!" urges Mainwaring. --David Stubbs

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Very Best of Dad's Army, Vol 2 is a further helping of episodes from the BBC's most durable comedy, well chosen to illustrate the variety of situations and predicaments in which Warmington-on-Sea's home guard find themselves. "Menace from the Deep" sees them marooned on the town pier, having to contend with a rogue mine and an inebriated Hodges. "Mum's Army" has Captain Mainwaring set up a women's division and promptly fall for the charming Miss Gray, in a cunning take on Brief Encounter. "No Spring for Frazer" charts Frazer's beleaguered attempts to locate a missing gun part with predictably disastrous results. "When Did You Last See Your Money?" similarly puts Corporal Jones through the mill after he switches a package containing £500 with one containing a half-pound of sausages. Finally, "The Honourable Man" brings the enmity of Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson to a head when the latter inherits an honorary title. The performances have that spontaneity and gently self-mocking humour so familiar, yet so enjoyable, however many times around.

On the DVD: The Very Best of Dad's Army, Vol 2 on disc has an accompanying documentary (partially reprised from that on Volume 1) containing interviews with surviving cast members, present-day comedians and Messrs Croft and Perry, whose inspired scriptwriting continues to amuse and entertain. The early-70s prints have come up well, with subtitles and six chapter headings per episode to make locating favourite scenes easier than ever. --Richard Whitehouse

Marvellous! 9 Oct 2003

Format:DVD
We bought this DVD because we enjoyed the first VERY BEST OF DAD'S ARMY VOLUME 1 so much. This was definitely another worthwhile purchase.

Stories include: Frazer losing the spring from Captain Manwaring's machine gun; George Manwaring making a fool of himself when he falls in love with a new lady recruit; the troops spending an unforgettable night on a pier; Jones losing a large amount of money and the episode when Sergeant Wilson becomes the Hon. Sergeant Wilson. It also includes a 23 minute edited version of the Dad's Army Story, with interviews from the surviving members of the cast, including the actors that played the Vicar, Mrs Fox, Mr Hodges, Pike and Jonesy.

If anyone from the BBC is reading this please don't let this be the last of the VERY BEST series! There is still so much we want to see!

We would thorough recommend this as a birthday or Christmas present to any Dad's Army fan.

Classic Comedy 28 Aug 2001

Format:VHS Tape
I have watched this video many times and it never ceases to make me laugh. It's full of the usual one-liners "stupid boy", "do you think that's wise", etc. The episode "The Deadly Attachment" contains the famous scene with Pike having his name added to the German captain's list. Nearly all of the actors are dead now so this video remains a tribute to a series the likes of which we will never see again.

This video contains another three great episodes of one of the best British programmes ever made. It contains the Home Guard attempting to outdo the ARP with a St George vs the Dragon display, Private Pike attempting to impress a lovely young lady and Private Fraser attempting to hang on to his treasured gold. Yet again, the scripts are very funny and the acting spot-on so this video can be watched again and again without losing any of its appeal.

Simply funny.
I now have the full set and never tire of watching them.

I'm sure a cast like this could never be assembled again to recreate the series.
