Like the original written tales, the film is anecdotal and chronicles events from the lives of the Rudd family. The story begins when the parents and their five grown children first arrive at their desolate selection. Their lives are as barren as the land as they struggle to work. The result of their toil is a meager harvest, which they try to sell in a depressed market. Despite their constant hard work and few rewards, the family is a lively bunch and despite their difficulties are able to stay together through thick and thin. This is not so much a review(sorry) but just a piece of information.
If you are a Joan Sutherland fan (as I am) then I can confirm that the Joan Sutherland listed in the credits for this DVD IS the famous soprano.
She was nearly 70 when this was made,some seven years or so after she retired from singing.
I have seen some clips of this,and sadly Joan is not that much better an actress on screen than she was on the operatic stage(but in opera she DID get better as her career went on).
So for Sutherland fans it's worth buying if only as a curiosity.
Quite how and why Joan decided to consider making this is anyone's guess?

Remake of a much earlier [b/w] version of the classic Aussie story of a disfunctional outback family. Entertaining, enjoyable, but misses the bitter-sweet pathos of the first film, and of the books.
