Product Description

Review

Clinical work of haematology is fascinating - and is based on hard work by colleagues, biomedical scientists and laboratory personnel meticulously using exact techniques. Progress in diagnosis, treatment and safety for the patients in the ward is only possible by correct application of scientifically based analysis.
For more than 50 years the spirit of "Dacie and Lewis" has influenced the laboratory field of haematology. This new version of the classic textbook represents the 10th edition which continues to describe the many standard and novel techniques by hands-on recipes, from basic principles to perfectionism, including comments and pictures of pitfalls and critical interpretation of results.
The methodologically laboratory basis for clinical haematology is an aspect not often covered in medical textbooks in the specialty. The tenth "Dacie and Lewis: Practical haematology" sets an impressive record and continues to succeed to solve the task with an excellent standard. -- "Eu --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

When I received this book to review, being a medical student I was surprised to see that it was an expert consult book. From opening the textbook I can see that this is a very comprehensive textbook that covers in detail the specialty of Haematology within the lab.

I do not feel that I am qualified to provide a review of the content of this book as it is far beyond what a medical student is required to learn as part of our undergraduate course.

I can however say to medical students that if you have any questions about the blood tests that we learn about and the investigations that are done in the lab on them including why, then this book is great for telling you due to the detail. The first few chapters are useful for all medical students as they walk you through taking a blood sample, the importance of getting the blood sample to the lab (what storage does to a sample), what the normal values for blood tests are in adults and then in children and during the first few days/months of life before in chapter 3 giving detail on the common blood tests.

If you are interested in going into Haematology or are doing an SSM/SAMP related to Haematology then this book would be well worth a read.

Whilst some of the descriptions in this text talk about the methodology , and are clearly aimed at the clinical scientist , rather than medical Haematologist , this book is fundamental to understand the inner workings and principles behind Haematological investigations , from the full blood count , to immunophenotyping .

Haematologists will remember the previous edition, it was/is the bible of
haematology Labs, simply because every test is included in this book,
including "recipes", theory behind a test. This new edition builds upon the
previous edition only now it includes up to date information and new modern
tests. Also included in this book a molecular biology section
