By Luc REYNAERT TOP 1000 REVIEWER on 10 July 2014
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This album is a compilation of Renaissance music magnificently sung by different choirs, but mostly by the Huelgas Ensemble under Paul Van Nevel.
It contains music by well known composers (Josquin Desprez), but also by less known names (Costanzo Festa, Serafino Dall’Aquilano).

Unfortunately, the producer committed a deadly sin by omitting to publish the texts of the songs in the accompanying comment. Fortunately, they can (more or less easily, with a translation) be found on the internet.

Highlights
Of the instrumental pieces, the frottola by F. de Lurano (8) shines through its beautiful melody.
Another frottola ‘Quando ritrovo la mia pastorella’ (When I meet my shepherdess) by C. Festa is also a melodic highlight, yet not a moral one: you can make love to me, but only for money.
Other highlights are the pure melody in ‘Tu solus qui facis mirabilia’ (You alone can do wonders), the onomatopoeias in ‘El Grillo’ (the cricket) or the beautiful sound waves (imitations and echoes) in ‘Miserere mei, Deus’, all by Josquin Desprez.
But, by far the best part of this CD is the astonishing canon for 36 voices ‘Deo Gratias’ by Johannes Ockeghem. This sublime short composition alone is well worth the very modest price of this album.
Highly recommended.

Excellent compilation, but no texts! 10 July 2014

some great Renaissance polyphony on this compilation 4 Jan 2010
By E. Mafi - Published on Amazon.com

Some great songs, especially the "Ave Maria a'4" by Josquin and the cool 36-voice, "Deo Gratias" from Ockeghem I'd not heard before (2 words and over 2 minutes!).

Fantásticas versiones de la música renacentista 9 Nov 2011
By Manuel Carranza C - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD

an excellent collection 23 Nov 2013
By naeler - Published on Amazon.com

This is a compilation of previously released vocal and instrumental music by several excellent groups.
Three tracts are by the Waverly Consort. Their Ave Maria, by Joaquin Desprez is a great find, of all of the many versions this one is my favorites - the voices and instruments blend perfectly! I wore out my vinyl album years ago and am so grateful to have found this tract on CD. The album is more than worth the cost, especially if you collect the Waverly Consort.
The other vocal groups are also excellent. There is something for everyone in this compilation, and this collection is a good place to start. My only reservation is that it is a compilation and I would rather have the whole albums, but as with the Waverly Consort, many of the albums are not on CD.

A Secular Genius Celebrated with Religious Music 1 April 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
You have to figure that a CD with Da Vinci in the title is trying to cash in on "The Da Vinci Code." I have loved Renaissance music since singing it in the college choir, and my very favorite early music group is the Waverly Consort. This CD is an anthology of previously recorded music and includes three songs from the Waverly Consort's "Italia Mia" album (never issued on CD, unfortunately). Of the 19 selections, 12 are religious, including a 12-minute rendition of Psalm 50. Considering Da Vinci's fascination with the natural world, this choice seems to show little regard for his genius. Also, sacred music is boring and repetitive compared to the lively secular music of the time. On the other hand, the music is all skillfully executed.
