I hate having to give this book only 2 stars, but this reflects the huge disappointment I felt when I spent a couple of hours studying the first chapter and doing the exercises - only to discover there was no answer key. This was infuriating for me as I do not have an Italian teacher and rely on self-assessment. After a long search I discovered that no such answer booklet exists. I should mention that the author was really sweet and apologetic about this when I contacted her.

The reason this is such a shame is because the book itself looks really good, working on grammar and writing skills with plenty of interesting material. In this sense, it will probably be very useful to those of you who have an Italian teacher or tutor who can correct the exercises for you.

However, this textbook also loses points for its terrible accompanying audio cassette. This could have redeemed the whole answer-key disappointment, as audio recordings are very important in language-learning. But I was equally disgusted to discover that the audio tape contains only the most simple of phrases, while ignoring the majority of what the book contains. It's as though the cassette doesn't even belong with the book! Each phrase is drilled out parrot-style and monotonously repeated twice, wasting half the already-meagre cassette space. There's no interaction whatsoever in the recordings, except 'pauses' for you to (presumably) repeat.

I give this book 2 stars for its usefulness as an exercise book for anyone who has an Italian teacher.

This is a superb book for anyone who wants to master the Italian language. I used it in the first year of my degree in Italian, when I was learning the language from scratch. It was an excellent preparation for the rest of my degree course. It covers many points of grammar, and is full of idiomatic expressions. The exercises are very useful.

Be warned though -- it's not really much use for anyone who wants to just get a smattering of the language for a holiday.
