Bought this as a standby when my built-in DVD drives stopped working after upgrading my desktop to Windows 7. They were supposedly compatible but after a fruitless search for W7 drivers to make them work, I bought this to serve as a standby. Now installed, and it does this almost on its own very quickly, I wish I had had this facility from the start in my two year old PC - it's faster, covers DVD formats including DVD RAM that most drives don't, and works like a dream both reading and writing. Despite another reviewer's comments, I have had no problems with noise or speed of this kit - quite the opposite. In short, its better than the originals and I would recommend it highly as a free-standing and transferable drive one could use interchangeably on desktop and laptop(s)though, given its size, it is not meant primarily as a portable drive. At this price and spec this represents a solid, highly functional and reliable drive - just what I wanted!

Does an average job 23 Feb 2010
This drive did what I needed it to do: create a double-sided DVD for the navigation system of a car that wasn't supplied with the navigation software. So for that reason this drive rates half the stars.

The reason I can't give this product more stars is that it doesn't work too well with Windows Vista. For starters it wouldn't read some games DVDs (which have intentionally broken disks for copy protection detection). Secondly, if I start watching a DVD it works fine, unless I pause it for a long time - after that the drive will attempt to seek on the drive, over and over and over again, and I have to eject the disc and reload to be able to start watching it again.

A good sturdy and solid dvd writer and nicely made as you would expect from HP. A Quality product which does the job and looks classic.
