My unit arrived several days late after having been insecurely packed and opened in transit. It was finally delivered after a week following repacking in a plastic bag by the Post Office. It also arrived with one of the small rubber support pads (of which more later) detached and loose in the box.
On to the product itself...
I was dubious at first sight as although large it seemed fairly flimsy and as it grips the Nexus 7 only along the lower third of the device and cannot open wide enough to grip the device when on it's side I was concerned about the tablet toppling forward from the mount. Also, I noticed that the four corner rubber gripping pads, vital to protect the phone and hold it securely, were all loose (bar the one that actually fell off).
The unit is supplied with both snap on aircon ventilator brackets and a suction grip with a separate support base. The aircon brack clipped in place so securely I was reluctant to attempt to remove it try the suction base and so this feature remains untested. I still doubt how well it would hold the relatively heavy Nexus 7 when on the suction grip base without support from the aircon bezel behind it. Once mounted in place on my a/c grill I was pleased to find the fitting was pretty secure and at no time did I fear the tablet was going to fall off. The unit rotates quickly and easily from Verticle to horizontal formats and can be locked in place as required. This is well implemented and again seems secure in use.
As soon as I returned home from the test drive I superglued the four rubber mounts in place to prevent them springing loose as they were attempting to do all the while during the journey. After that the mount worked fine and gripped my beloved new Nexus 7 far more securely than I at first thought. See my photographs to illustrate this.
I have to admit that it seems my worries were unfounded as the mount does seem to do a good job once the initial problems were sorted out.
The Good Fits the Nexus 7 in upright mode Holds the tablet surprisingly securely when attached to the aircon grill. The tablets sits securely behind the rubber mounting grips so it cannot easily fall out Rotates simply and easily from upright to horizontal positionin Bargain price
The Bad Appears flimsy and poorly built at first sight The rubber mounting pads arrived loose and needed glueing in place Can only hold the Nexus 7 in upright mode (but the unit will rotate to allow landscape use) Poorly packaged in a flimsy and lightweight box.
Although at first I had doubts about the build quality and indeed a running repair was needed straight from the box nevertheless when this was done the unit does the job well and rather better than I had hoped for. The price is excellent and for the price this unit is difficult not to recommend.
I purchased this device to use my Nexus 7 as a Sat Nav system in my Car
+ Very flexible in range of motion. + Held the Nexus 7 well in the foam pads. + Opens up by pressing a button (almost looks powered when opening). + The suction pad has stayed on the windscreen for a 250 mile trip to Cornwall. + Not used Dashboard mount but same as a similar 1 I used to have mechanical fixing as strong as the vent it's on! + Price is very good. + Various options for mounting suction to screen, suction to stick on pad (not used), clips to air vent (not used). + Allows portrait or Landscape mode when mounting.
- Initially was worried it would not support the Nexus but after a few trips confidence is growing. - Wobbles around slightly but has not let me down at all.
I would recommend this to others looking to mount any 7" tablet in car.
This is one of the rare holders for 7" tablets I could find, and it can also hold standard mobile phones. Pros: Affordable, flexible, simple Cons: rattles/vibrates when empty, even on not so bumpy roads.
