Product Description

‘Drift Away’ was a US Top 5 hit in 1973 showing a complete change of style for the hit recorder of Northern Soul favourites ‘Out On The Floor’ and ‘The In Crowd’. In the UK, ‘Drift Away’ was a turntable hit but didn’t trouble the charts. All three albums are from the mid-70s, originally on MCA Records. These recordings show a more soulful side of Gray with a country tinge! Digitally remastered and slipcased, and with new notes.

Dobie Gray died a few before I wrote this review. All the obits refer to the title track of the first LP of this 2CD threefer and for good reason; 'Drift Away' is quite simply one of the greatest tracks of the 1970's and arguably of the pop-rock era. Great tune, lyrics and an outstanding vocal - a classic of the tallest order and a fine legacy for an underappreciated artist. These three albums details the mid-70's partnership of Dobie Gray with Mentor Williams (who penned 'Drift Away') the brother of the great songwriter Paul Williams who penned a number of the Carpenters early 70's classics.

The albums all recorded in Nashville encompass an interesting cross-fusion of soul and country with the emphasis firmly on the latter which was [and still is] unusual for a black R&B singer and for this reason Dobie was one of the first black artists to sing at the headquarters of country the Grand Ol'Opry. The combination of Dobie's soulful pipes with countrified arrangements but still with a firm R&B underpinning is both original and appealing and all three albums mantain a highly consistent standard, though the 1st is definitely the best.

Despite the quality of these sets after the 'Drift Away' single exited the charts further commercial success was elusive, more is the pity. Perhaps he fell between the stools; too country for R&B radio and too ...... well you know for country radio and of course the dead hand of disco was rearing its head by '75 which was to dominate everything for better and worse for the next 3-4 years. Their loss frankly but all these years later listeners with an ear for something different will certainly appreciate the unusual cross-fusion of country and soul on these sets which serve as an excellent tribute to a superb vocal stylist.

I had long been aware of Dobie Gray's success in the sixties with The in-crown and in the seventies with Drift away, but never actually bought any of his own music (except tracks that appeared on multi-artist compilations until I heard a cover of Roll on sweet Mississippi (by Pussycat on Alle 40 Goed). I'd never heard the song before but was impressed enough to do sone research, which led me to this collection of three Dobie Gray albums.

Drift away remains the standout track here, but Dobie also performs fine versions of Loving arms, We had it all and Roll on sweet Mississippi. It seems that Dobie wanted to be the next Charley Pride (a black singer who made his career in country music, and who remains the only black singer to become a major country singer) but he ended up being a minor figure.

Nevertheless, this is a fine collection of Dobie's music.

Anyone of a certain age would recognise the sound of "Drift Away" even if some could not name the singer. Less so now, but it was a staple airplay favourite for decades after its release in the early 1970s - and yes, it is indisputably a classic track with its dreamy feel and its "clap along to the acapella section" climax.

His much earlier success with "The In Crowd" in 1965 is less well remembered now - but it's a great dance number.

Yes, the version of "Drift Away" on this album is the original hit, not from the later (less good) collection of remakes that were pushed out in recent years (easy way to tell: if Dobie sings "Daaaaay after day I'm all confused" then you have the remake and not the original hit). But, fear-not! This collection is ALL the original releases, no record company scam here - all gold!

Sadly, Dobie was never able to capitalise on the success of either of his international hits. He himself felt that his record company weren't sure to whom they should be marketing soul/country crossover music - and unlike other fusion genres (jazz/rock being the obvious example) it never really caught fire. in commercial terms at least.

I still have a vinyl copy of his "Loving Arms" album which includes the sublime "Good Old Song" on which they were obviously trying to capture the same feel as on "Drift Away" and I do prefer "Good Old Song" over its predecessor - the stereo guitar work on it is magnificent and Dobie's vocal is soaked in feeling. That whole album is a very enjoyable tour through various moods of soul and country - happy, sad, moody and thoughtful with very high production values - which are even more apparent on CD than they were on plastic.
