“Adventure always begins with the unexpected...” as Aidan Thomas came to realise when he discovered the door within. Aidan was the shy, fat kid with few friends at school, until Robby came along. Robby took him under his wing and life at school changed for Aidan. That I until his wheelchair-bound grandfather took a turn for the worst and his family relocate to another state. Left without any friends, as Robby went off to summer camp, Aidan is alone in the house with only his grandfather for company.

Suddenly transport to the world of Glimpses, King Alleble and the evil Lord Paragor with their knights, castles, unicorns and dragons this is well and truly a work of fantasy. It is at this point I do have to question the Amazon listing under Religion and Spirituality. As with any children’s fantasy worth its salt there is an underlying message of good versus evil and good prevailing through the darkest of times.

I can see this book appealing to children and adults alike that enjoy the works of such authors as Philip Pullman, Neil Gaiman and Marcus Sedgwick. It is the perfect introduction for a trilogy, it grabs you and engages you from the start and by the end you are begging for the second book of the trilogy. We haven’t seen the last of Aidan or Gwenne. And I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Robby either…

Amazing 18 April 2010

This book and series are amazing. They may be reallly christian based but the storylines are as good as Lord of the Rings. The battle sequences are thrilling and all the charactors will stay with you forever. It made me want to live Alleble! The quotes about adventure are really inspiring and good to know. I would reccomend this to anyone! Seriously a must read.

It's a good story - young lad gets pulled into another world and ends up as a knight in a war - but the Christian references get in the way of the story for me. It could have been a much better book if the author hadn't tried to shoehorn elements of the Christian story into the book.

Also, there were far too many exclamation marks at the ends of sentences for my liking - it's OK in speech but surely not in description? And why were so many words italicised? Words like portcullis which really don't need italics...

Overall, I'd read it again, and I'd like to read the others in the trilogy, but it's not one of the better fantasy books out there.
