A scientist takes you through his difficulties of obtaining legislation permitting his research into a fringe drug, then to a selection of test subjects and psychological analysis of their conditions in choosing their appropriateness for experimentation on, but still selecting people with clearly very disturbed lives, then experiments with and explains dosing, and interviews participants both during and after their experiences, and then towards the end of the book, drifts off from the realms of rational science into 'hippiedom' in drawing conclusions that maybe, just maybe, these experiences are real, for the reason of the similarity of experiences of test subjects, seemingly ignoring the fact our brains are all wired similarly and that similar experience, of what is ultimately an inward experience, is not indicative of any true nature of any experience, or any actual consistent external reality, outside of the creation of the mind.
