5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book 7 Sep 2001
Format:Paperback
It is a beautiful book with over 1,000 high-quality pictures. As soon as I bought the book, I was able identify couple of fossils I found accidentally. After an introductory section, there are three sections; namely, invertebrates, vertebrates and plants. The introductory chapter includes where to look for fossils and equipment for fossil collection. In general there are about two to three fossils introduced on one page. As well as the photograph of the fossil, there is a tiny drawing of the complete animal (or plant) at the corner (I managed to find the names of my daughter's toy dinosaurs by looking at these pictures). The order to which the fossil belongs, name of the family, habitats and the informal name, together with the geological range, geographical distribution and the occurrence frequency are all given. Explanations are brief but more than enough for amateurs like me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Visually impressive 13 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I picked this book up after struggling to find any books about prehistoric animals aimed at adults. This is the best one that I could find and is up to DK's usual standards of being visually impressive. The drawings are nicely annotated with pithy and informative notes. In it's favour, the book also includes thumb-nail sketches of what the various animals would have looked like when the animals were alive. In addition the guide outlines where the fossils can be found, what era they date from and how commonplace they are. The book is organised in ascending phylla but there is a marked bias towards invertebrates with masses of shell fish, sea urchins, trilobites, ammonites and crinoids. The vertebrates first appear on page 194 and reptiles on page 225. There are only 10 pages with dinosaurs on, perhaps reflecting their rarety.

All in all, this is fascinating to read and offers informative details about the kind of prehistoric life that I wanted to learn about. The only downside is the fact that the book is not that practical unless you intend on doing alot of globe trotting. A more UK-centred book would have been more useful although this is a small grumble given that the subject is endlessly fascinating. An absorbing book that is great fun to dip in to.

5.0 out of 5 stars fossils 8 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is one of the best books from DK -at least they didnt make a mess of the illustrations as theey usually do.
After a good introduction section that includes ,what is a fossil, means ofpreservation,a geological time chart, where to look and an identification key.
Fossils are divided into 3 -vertebrates,invertebrates and plants. For each species there is an illustration with size, adiscussion of the fossil, habitat and common and Latin names.
Very well researched and presented. It contains all you will need to know about fossils.
