I bought this guide on the strenth of the wonderful illustrations and of other reviews on Amazon. I have just come back from touring around Bordeaux and the Dordogne and this book was my constant companion, so here are my thoughts.

The book does indeed have excellent illustrations of key tourist sites (eg Bordeaux Grand Opera house) and some charming maps. There are excellent suggested tours around the Medoc region and plenty of suggestions of places to stop and visit. However, i found that the book's maps lacked detail and despite the artistic skill on show, they were not particularly helpful for navigating, particularly so of the several city maps for Sarlat, St Emilion etc. Only the main conduits had their street names shown, which made route finding a little tricky at times, when more detailed maps can be so easily picked up from the tourist offices.

I was also a little underwhelmed by the books decision to have separate directories at the back for places to eat and stay at in each location, rather than have them form part of each section. When looking at the Bergerac section for example you have to flick to the back of the book to look up restaurants or hotels in the town. This section was pretty poor in my opinion, with most towns having only one or 2 eateries recommended when clearly there are many many more establishments worth visiting. If you're on a culinary trip, this quide is not going to be of much use.

My main criticism is that the overall tone of the book is a little neutral, in that it seems afraid to have an opinion on anything. It has a very bland feel to it; I gave up reading the sections on some towns when every single one started by listing the date that each town's churches were built/repaired/torn down/expanded etc etc. It never tells you what things are NOT worth visiting (eg Riberac), and often seems to fall into endless lists of dates of historical significance without giving enough practical advice

Having said that, the book was my constant companion and was on other occasions very useful. It is particularly strong on the Medoc area and the wine Chateau, so if you're going to that area this book has plenty to reccomend it.

Good for first time 5 July 2009
Format:Paperback
As we have never visited the area before, I thought it would be good to have a guide. This is a very nice, visual guide, which does not miss out the main attractions, however it is not detailed enough, if you are looking for a restaurants or crossing smaller villages which might also be interesting.

I think it covers what it promisse and it is attractive to look at, and we had a lovely time but next time around I might go for little more detailed one.
