I just returned from a long weekend in Rome and bought the Eyewitness Travel guide to Rome prior to going. The book was useful right from the second I bought it as it advised me that getting a train from the airport was just as easy as getting a taxi. Before we left we used the guide to plan where we were going to go and then once in Rome there were so many facts and pieces of trivia about everything we looked at that I didn't once feel that I needed to be part of a tour group. There wasn't one place in Rome that the guide didn't have some useful information or facts about and I would highly recommend anyone who is planning a trip to Rome take this book with you.

Fantastic!!!!! 25 April 2011

This book is amazing and very informative.

We have just got back from Rome and I don't think we would have had such a perfect holiday without this book.

I ordered it from Amazon a few months before hand and was able to plan the places where we wanted to go and how we would get there. There is so much information about EVERYTHING you need to know, from all the public transport routes, maps, useful phrases (which we used regularly) and even to where you can buy transport tickets with pictures of ticket machines and how to use them. It is small enough to fit in your bag, and just about fitted in my back pocket.

This book even has recommended routes for small walks of the different areas of Rome.

I highly recommend you buy and use this book!!! As the other review says, we would have been totally lost in Rome if we did not have it. Our holiday would not have been as enjoyable and fun without it.

I will definitely stick with DK Eyewitness Travel books when we go away again, I cannot give it enough praise and have nothing negative to say about it.

This guide book has a small amount of information about a large number of topics. It comes with a pull out map. Both map and guide are well made and durable, although we needed reading glasses. It proved adequate for a short break to Rome; more info on a smaller number of topics would have been better for us.

The main drawback is that it is not a *practical* guide. For example, it does not compare bus and train journeys from the airport (hot/long vs short/more expensive); it suggests to "pop into" St Peter's - not mentioning the queuues that make that impossible (best before 8:30am); there are at least three ways to avoid the *huge* queues at the Colosseum, but it suggests none of them (best book in advance online at the official website).

The book is too large/heavy for a pocket, but that's probably true of most guides.

The map, while durable, is not entirely accurate; North is not as it seems to be indicated; exits from eg Piazza Navonna are not exactly as shown; the orientation of Trajan's Arch is incorrect; and so on. You can get by with it, but if you are good with maps, expect some frustration.
