I've never been to Norway, know next to nothing about the country and only two words of the language so this book has been a godsend to me.The inside cover includes a simple map of the regions of Norway followed by an introduction to the country including its climate, wildlife, fjords (a main reason for the visit) and history before moving onto the regions starting with Oslo. This section is expecially detailed and covers a full 100 pages including streetplans (and a very useful street index), all the landmarks, harbours, sites of interest etc complete with map references where appropriate and excellent photography ranging from small images to full page and several full colour double-page spreads. The next section covers the rest of Norway supplemented again by illustrative maps, photographs and descriptions of its towns, villages, harbours and islands. Throughout there are contact telephone numbers of Tourist Information Centres and website addresses. The final section provides information for travellers, particularly overseas visitors such as myself with next to no experience of foreign travel. Here there are listings of serviced accommodation (no camping or self-catering), places to eat and information about shopping in Norway, reclaiming VAT on purchases, entertainment, outdoor activities and practical information such as health services, currency information, mobile phone networks and travel information followed by a useful brief phrase book. In short, this book offers everything a first-time visitor to Norway will need. It is well-written, provides clear maps, enticing photography and is easy to carry around while travelling and its oversized stiffened protective cover will keep it in good condition.
