Beautiful but useless 16 Aug 2011
This guide is beautifully presented but lacks substance. It suffers from having been translated from an Italian text without also being tailored to the needs of an international audience.
For anyone planning to visit the Cinque Terre, a World Heritage area and one of the Italian riviera's key attractions, this guide is completely useless - it has just one double page on the Cinque Terre, much of which is taken up with illustrations and photos. No practical information is provided, just the address of the website of the park which provides limited information in English.
Among other things this lack of information means that there is nothing to indicate that the innocuous-sounding "coastal tour route" is actually extremely arduous between Monterosso and Vernazza (as well as pathetically badly signposted) and not suitable for the very young, old, infirm or asthmatic.
More generally the guide tends to assume readers will travel by car and thus provides little information about other forms of transport (except for the telephone numbers of railway stations, which it is hard to imagine many people using). The paucity of information on public transport in Genoa is a case in point. The web address of the city transport company is given but the site turns out to be entirely in Italian.
It looks like Dorling Kindersley have simply translated an Italian guide without addressing the gaps that need to be filled if it is to be useful for international travellers who cannot necessarily read Italian websites.
