When I was assigned an ex-pat position in Europe, I bought a bookshelf full of travel guides. The Eyewitness series attracted me because of their colourful, graphic pages. Now that I'm here and actually using them, I confess I find them actually useful. I am able to plan excursions, get rates (using the provided phone numbers) and such. Of all the ones I bought, this series is the one I come back to over and over again.
Look for their Paris book for more specifically on Paris. The Great Britain book is good as well. I would also highly recommend the Michelin Green (& Red of course!) Guides.

The best 2 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
Eyewitness Travel Guides are beautifully presented with good detail and photographs. The France guide is no exception. My wife and I recently drove around France for three weeks. We planned it as we went, stayed one night in each hotel and with the help of an atlas and this guide saw the secluded France we were hoping for. We drove on D roads wherever possible and chose the most beautiful places to visit. At least half of these we would have missed without the help of Eyewitness. A great guide and thanks for a great holiday.

This book was purchased for me by a well meaning relative. It has the usual Eyewitness Guides layouts and is extremely well presented.

The problem is that a book that covers such a large subject will by definition spread itself thinly. The information presented appears accurate to my non expert eyes but to get a decent feeling for particular areas, towns and regions it must be better (if more expensive) to buy more local guides.

I do thoroughly recommend Eyewitnesses French regional guides but do check out Rough Guides for a different point of view.

Loving France
I'd already bought the same guide to the Bordeaux area so knew what to expect. These are great for all areas as there is so much detail but easy to read.
