I've used DK guides for several destinations in W Europe and have liked them - the format works well for historic sites where basic tourist info is easy to obtain by other means. I bought this because it was the most up to date and also we were visiting both countries. However, in Cambodia and Laos it was endlessly frustrating: having browsed it before leaving we also took a 2008 guidebook - not DK - to Laos (a trusty old friend) which was much more use and bought another Cambodia one while there.

We found the tone patronising of both reader and subject. We missed the respectful tone of other guidebook series that we have used. To be fair, DK guides are probably aimed at people travelling in more style than we do but we were irritated by comments such as 'the best way to view Angkor is in an air-conditioned car with driver'. In practice, our observation was that travellers not in organised tours were most likely to hire a tuk-tuk and driver by the day.

Places we were interested in had very little information (e.g. half a column on the whole of the Bolavens Plateau). We were also disappointed by the total absence of any mention of the many opportunities, especially in Cambodia, to shop and eat in a way that benefits good causes. Most of all we were frustrated by the sparse amount of practical information e.g. how and where to change money, where to catch a bus and how long journeys take etc etc. There are also too few maps and often not especially useful.
