As usual with Eyewitness guidebooks, this is a well illustrated, appealingly presented guide to Argentina. I might wish that the text was rather more informative.

We travelled to Argentina with this book in hand in March 2011, and before arriving had found it an attractive book to flick through and outline our plsns. Like all Eyewitness guides much of the page space is filled with large, colourful photos, and information is general and nowhere near as detailed as, say, a Lonely Planet, Rough Guide or Time Out.

Once we actually arrived in Mendoza, Patagonia and Buenos Aires, as independet travellers, we found the book to be of little day to day use. In BA for example, the book covers important sights area by area, but often the (admittedly good) street maps are turned upside down or on their sides in the area by area close ups! Some buildings are a block away from where they are marked too. Most of all though we found practical information and advice to be absent. Which parts of La Boca are safe(st)? How do we actually get to Uruguay on a day trip - where does the ferry go from and how much does it cost? Is a guided tour to a football game recommended, or can you brave a match independently?

We had to ask lots of questions online and at our hotel reception because this guide book does't tell you anything about how to do certain things. Oh and for the record, we walked from San Telmo to La Boca without feeling in danger but it did feel edgy, there are two ferry companies (at least) which leave from different terminals to Uruguay and offer fast (1 hour) and slow (3 hours plus) crossings to Colonia in Uruguay, and we played it safe and booked a football tour, but were alarmed to be in the Ultras stand. Some companies may be more reputable than others - ask where in the stadium your tickets are and whether you have a seat (which would be safest).

Overall, this book is colourful and interesting as an overview of Argentina, probably more so pre-travelling - or for people on an organised tour. For practicalities of transport, arranging trips and events etc, look elsewhere or buy another guide as well as this one.
