This compact guidebook is an ideal companion to a weekend break in this beautiful city. Well laid out and superbly illustrated it gives the essential lowdown on Tallinn and its surroundings. Covering the many sights in Old Tallinn and the city centre, it also contains plentiful suggestions for things to do and places to visit just outside of the city. Trips to the beach at Pitita, the historic Kadriorg Park, the cycle trails through the forest at the Estonian Open-Air Museum, trips out to the picturesque suburbs like Kalamaja with its wooden houses and many many more. Places even further afield are also covered, such as the seaside resort of Parnu and Estonia's second city Tartu, both of which are easily reached by coach in an hour or two. Pair this Top 10 guide with a copy of 'Tallinn in Your Pocket' [for restaurants & nightlife] which you can usually pick up from your hotel, and you can't go wrong.
The only omission from this guide as far as I can tell, and the reason why I gave it four stars instead of five, is the lack of a "Top Ten Things to do in Winter" section. Estonia has wonderfully cold, snowy winters and having just been there in temperatures averaging minus 15, many of the trips and activities suggested in this guide simply weren't feasible in such conditions. However, winter in Estonia has a beauty all of its own and there is no shortage of things to do within a few miles of Tallinn. Snowmobiling, downhill and cross-country skiing, ice-skating, snow-shoeing, ice cliff climbing, winter jeep safaris and forest snow trails are just some of the activities available to wintertime visitors to this beautiful country.
As always with these Top 10 Guides, they do exactly what they say on the tin and no more. Basic information, well presented in a clear easy-to-understand format, aimed squarely at the weekend break market. If you need or want more than that then you'd be better off with a more substantial guidebook. For the short-break visitor though, this is a superb, value-for-money guidebook that will help you get the most out of your trip. Nautida Eesti!
