Trevor Jackson (formerly known as hip-hop producer The Underdog) has built up some serious beat credentials over the years--the kind that would make most so called "underground" artists look like manufactured boy bands. Even his recent Playgroup project--by far his most accessible and "poppy" work to date--managed to retain a definite keep-it-real feel amid the shiny, feel good blend of punk, hip-hop, funk and disco. Here, the stalwart presents the next instalment of K7's esteemed DJ Kicks series.
With over two decades of involvement with music under his belt and no associations to any fixed genre, Jackson must have had a nightmare trying to slim his options down to album length. He's done it though, and with skill and aplomb, stringing together 23 tracks that range from the 70s/80s era of Human League ("Do or Die") and Flying Lizards ("House of Jealous Lovers") up to more modern offering like Metro Area's "Caught Up" and I:Cube's reworking of Ana Rago's "You're God". On the whole, the mix feels retro and contemporary all at the same time; it's subtle asperity fitting in nicely with the current revival in louche 80s electro. An entertaining and educational mix from one of Britain's longest-serving electronic talents. --Paul Sullivan

Having bought both Playgroup's self titled album and Kruder and Dofrmeister's recent DJ Kicks release, I was somewhat intrigued to hear what this would sound like, but it did not disappoint. The mixing is arguably better than the aforemention K7 offering, and certainly more uplifting and funky Some of the tracks are reminisent of late 70s funk, but are supplemented by more chilled lounge beats. Following from their own ablbum, I think Playgroup have made a great album here, and it will be on my stereo for a long while yet.

I wasn't too sure about this, having had a lukewarm reaction to the earlier Playgroup album and its Prince-like mix if house-disco and funk. However, it is an absolutely brilliant mix of electronic music, old and new, but with a slant on an early to mid 80s sound. Guaranteed to get most parties dancing and talking at the same time.

Be wary of the track listing for this, the one you see here is for the cd. This is an excellent selection however, the sort that would take you years to find so a big thank you to Trevor Jackson for saving us all that time... The dub of The Human League is surprisingly brilliant and the Flying Lizards a treat ("that's what I want I want you're money...") although it is devoid of those bizarre vocals. Ralphi Rosario's track is the only straight up house tune, but that is excatly what this is all about, a selection that can be used in a club, at home or your uncle's wedding anniversary. You need this if only for it's eccentricity
