God is a DJ (Hero),

This review is from: DJ Hero - Turntable Kit (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
Music/Rhythm action games are all about the four elements: Peripheral, music, atmosphere and challenge. DJ Hero excels pretty fully in all these areas.
Firstly the peripheral, it is certainly the major draw of the package and is what defines and justifies the high price point. The "decks" you get with DJ Hero are of high quality, they feel solid, the turntable and fader are responsive and generally it makes the game a joy to play. Along with the fader and turntable there are three buttons on the turntable which are used to manipulate the two tracks or for scratching a particular track by holding the button down and moving the turntable. The centre button is used to drop in random effects or some freestyle samples which can be selected before you begin a mix. There is also an effects dial which can be used in freestyle sections to change the phase properties of the songs being played. For the most part the buttons are well laid out with the only real gripe being that the blue button is slightly too close to the turntable which makes scratching the right track a touch harder than it should have been. This however is a minor gripe and the rest of the peripheral is well produced and adds highly to the addictive value of the game. The music within the game is superb. There are many individual songs in the game that I don't like, however when mixed together here they totally change their shape and I've yet to come across a track that isn't listenable. Most of the mixes are of exceptional high quality and to play along with the tracks is extremely rewarding especially when perfecting some of the more technical aspects of a mix. It's hard not to put your hands up in the air after completing a heavy section of scratching and fading that drops into the next musical bomb on the mix. The game builds itself upon a strong hip-hop b-boy atmosphere with the clubs that you DJ in full of life and activity with the quirky camera angles, fast cuts and frantic zoom work that you'd expect from a clubbing video. Whilst it's hard to concentrate on any of the background activity going on when trying to play it still helps the player to suspend their disbelief and draw them into the experience. With five difficulty modes there is good scope to customise the challenge to suit the player. The easier settings just taking place mainly on the turntable with the fader not being brought in until medium. The medium setting is where most players will reside as it provides a consistently growing challenge as you make your way through the preset set lists heading towards ever more difficult mixes. It's not until the Hard setting that directional scratches are included and this is a point that I have yet to reach myself, however mastery of the higher settings does seem to promise a much closer to life experience. The hardest setting however looks to demand almost Jedi-like abilities of foresight and knowledge combined with the eyes of an eagle as notes, scratches and fades fly towards the player at ridiculous speeds. There may be some out there who can tackle this mode but for most humans (well those of us lacking cybernetics) I think it will be a push too far, especially with directional scratches flying at the player faster than they can read the screen. One of the major challenges however will be in high score hunting, hitting reams of notes correctly combined with the use of a Euphoria button (that doubles the points multiplier) and a rewind feature that allows you to play previously completed sections with a double multiplier. Both are set up for activation by hitting correct note strings however the rewind is particularly satisfying as this requires a reverse 360 spin of the turntable to bring the track back. There are plenty of unlockables from DJs and decks to venues that provide incentives for getting high scores and reaching the 5 star goal. Overall the whole package is excellent, the peripheral certainly justifies the price, the music is superb and all the elements come together to make an essential alternative to the Rock Band/Guitar Hero offerings.

This game is easily one of my favorite games from this year if not ever, yea its 90 quid but trust me its worth every penny i cant even begin to tell you just how much frigging fun this game is!!!!. The music is spot on every song a quality mash up who would of thought Marvin Gaye mixed the Gorillas would work but it so does and so does every other tune, scratching and cross fading between tunes is so much fun its unbelievable.
I cant think of one negative thing about this game yea its £90 but I soon as i started scratching I soon forgot all about it, besides just to listen to MC Hammer mixed With Vanilla Ice is well worth the price of admission, Guitar Hero is good but Dj Hero is frigging awesome!!!!
