Book Description

7 May 2012
The DIY Couture collection is 10 stylish, easy to make pieces of clothing that can be endlessly reinvented in different fabrics, textures and colours. Anyone who enjoys sewing and creating something unique will love using this book to make their own couture wardrobe. The book begins with a Useful Techniques section, followed by Collections: inspirational photographs of the pieces styled different ways. Next, each of the 10 garments, from a Goddess dress to a cool romper suit and hoody, is clearly explained, including a spread showing all the variations (e.g. fastenings, necklines and hems) possible for each garment. Finally, clear step by step illustrations and photographs show you how each piece is made. With no complex sewing patterns, even beginners at sewing can make their own beautiful clothes. With simple, visual instructions and cool styling, DIY Couture will inspire people to join the handmade revolution. Where eco-fashion meets street style, this is the antithesis of fast-fashion. Absolutely no patterns required!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really creative and clever =) 27 May 2012

I absolutely loved this book! This book has a really neat and easy to understand layout that follows the author's appraoch to sewing - a visual activity needs visual understanding. The first section goes through basic sewing techniques and the equipment that you will need throughout the book. Again, these sewing instructions are very easy to understand and the book uses both visual and literary explanations throughout.

The second and main section goes through the garment construction. There is a lot of inspiration from this book as the reader gets to see the author's interpretations of her garments, which can then be transferred to your own garments when planning what to sew. The pretty interesting part of this book I found were the techniques used. The book says 'no patterns required' and that is absolutely true! All you really need are some of your own clothes and a measuring tape.

I think this book is perfect for anyone who is interested in sewing. If you are a beginner, this is an ingenious book which will start you off at the basics and even if you're more advanced, it's pretty inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for ideas 30 Mar 2014
By JackieL
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book is great for showing you how to take a basic shape - a straight skirt, a tunic, trousers, a hoodie etc - and create variations on the basic template by using different fabrics, different lengths, adding trims, using different fastening methods etc etc. The photo illustrations showing the garments in all the different 'collections' are excellent and made me want to get going with sewing straight away. Don't be fooled though, just because there are no patterns, doesn't mean it's as easy as pie. Seams still need to be straight and neatened, some of the projects have zips, some have elastic or bound seams - so you need patience just as with any sewing. The instructions are good, and the visual presentation is a plus, but there are still some parts that leave you scratching your head! I've made the straight skirt and the tunic, and am very pleased with how they worked out. Looking forward to trying another project soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for absolute beginners 14 April 2013
By Dizzle
Format:Paperback
I was given this book as a Christmas present. I had never, ever had any training in sewing at all. I am from the generation where textiles, food tech, and all the practical things my parents were taught in school, were deemed unimportant for my education. Anyway, I felt inspired by my Christmas gift. I bought a sewing machine and a few accessories and just got on with it. The instructions are super easy to follow, and really shows that anyone can make clothing!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Great 27 Feb 2014
By Fox_E
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I found this books approach to dress making to be a bit sloppy.

I find the concept of slashing up fabric with chalked out markings to not be the best. Tricky to get clothes symmetrical using this method.

Personally once I got to grips with using paper patterns and read a few other books, they were not that daunting after all and this book was a waste of money. I never went back to it again.

This book consists of 10 stylish, easy to make items of clothing that can be continuously reinvented using different fabric, textures and colours to create a wide variety of unique garments. The book is crammed full of great illustration & photo based instructions, which is great for those like me who work better with visual directions. I love one of the key messages of the book "don't worry too much about the details" meaning that you don't have to be a perfectionist to make great unique items of clothing. This is sewing the DIY way.

I've studied `proper' pattern cutting and hated it, too much maths, fuss and fiddling! So was a tad nervous when I saw the big yellow `No Patterns Needed' sticker on the front. However, I'm very pleased to say that this book involved no pattern cutting, just garments you already own being used as templates. As you make our own patterns it means that every size and shape can be catered for this book.

I love the fact that the 10 garments are each made as part of 8 different collections, each giving them a different look showing just how versatile they are. These cover everything from a simple straight skirt and waistcoat through to the more complex hoody and romper suit. Looking forward to giving the cloak a go myself with some lovely Welsh wool I have in my stash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't decide which to make first! 9 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
So many great ideas in this. The only pattern I'm not bothered about is the goddess dress, which would only look good on someone with no boobs whatsoever. The rest of the patterns look great though and I'm looking forward to giving them my own twist.
