Product Description

The companion album to “24 Hours A Day – Ian Levine: The Disco Years” is this sterling collection of Ian Levine’s 1980s HI-NRG output - a scene in which Ian Levine was superbly qualified as he was the resident DJ at London’s No.1 Gay club, Heaven, throughout the 1980s, thus setting the musical agenda for the rest of Europe throughout this period. Once again compiled by aficionado Simon White, “Beating Faster – Ian Levine: The Hi-NRG Years” once again collects the creme de la crème of Levine’s HI-NRG releases between 1984-1990 including such in-demand and commercially difficult to find tracks like Miquel Brown’s “This Time It’s Real”, Sadie Nine’s “Number One Lover”, Seventh Avenue’s “Loves Gone Mad” and Norma Lewis’s “Surprise Me Tonight” among many other gems. As with the other volume, many of these tracks have been generally unavailable on CD until now and certainly many of these mixes are making their CD debut for the very first time too!

All tracks have been extensively re-mastered and sound the best that they’ve ever been. There is the usual 8 page booklet with sleeve notes by Simon White and a number of scans and photos, all superbly packaged in a stylish 2CD pack with slipcase.

No problems with sound quality for me, maybe I'm just not picky enough or perhaps my hearing isn't what it used to be, but I'm more than happy with it.

Given Ian Levine's enormous output, choosing tracks that everyone wants included on the CD was always going to be a tall order, there are a few tracks here that have been available on CD elsewhere, which is a shame, as most fans who will by this compilation will already have them, but there are some real gems that have been included in their 12" form for the first time, most notable Rocq-e-Harrell's 'My Heart Keeps Beating Faster' and The Elgins 'Heaven Must Have Sent You' (you really had to hear them played loud in nightclubs to get just how great these two 12"s were at the time, both bring back lovely memories for me).

These 2 CDs focus more on his late 80s output and only a couple of early Hi NRG tracks were included (7th Avenue, Earlene Bentley & Sadie Nine), and personally I would have liked some of Ian's many remixes for other artists to have been included (will 'Countdown' by Kofi & The Lovetones ever make it onto CD?), but I guess licencing would prove a costly and tricky problem.
Is it too greedy of me to want a compilation focused purely on his Nightmare Records label, and one focus on the earlier Record Shack label (including all his remixes for the fabulous Electricity Records label)??

There is only one track that doesn't sit right for me in this selection, and that's the Liz Land's song, surely Syreeta's 'If The Shoe Fits' would have been a more suitable choice from the Motorcity label, but still, its wonderful to hear all these tracks again, and a certain kind of man, of a certain age will definitely recognise many of these songs from their dissolute youth!

And you get an unreleased Linda Clifford track too!!!

First thing to mention is that this is NOT in any way the horrific crackle-ridden disaster reported by another reviewer, who admitted in the comments that they used headphones when listening. Heard through my good-quality surround sound home theatre stereo system at high volume, it sounds absolutely fine. If vinyl was used, the end result is excellent.

This release is a continuation of the journey that started on DISCO RECHARGE: 24 HOURS A DAY- IAN LEVINE: THE DISCO YEARS. That CD looked at Levine's output in the 70s, this one focuses on the 80s when the drum machine and synthesiser had taken over dance music. They make a great companion set. The fact it's a continuation of the Disco Years turns out to be both an advantage and a disadvantage - on the one hand, you get to see how Levine's trademark sound evolved with the new decade and its technology; on the other hand, the sound didn't change that much (it still has that Northern Soul influence) so it does begin to feel like more of the same. It could have done with a couple of very distinctive tracks to freshen it up. Levine did loads of remixes and productions during the 80s, such as a 12-minute version of Vikki Benson's Easy Love, as well as remixes for Dollar, Bucks Fizz, Sister Sledge, Sylvester, Kiki Dee, Helena Springs and Klymaxx. Rights/licensing may have been an issue in getting hold of other tracks, of course.

An unreleased Linda Clifford track - apparently found on an old tape and wonderfully restored into the digital realm - is among the attractions for disco collectors.
