The item is simple to use, and powering from USB has less messy cabling. The disc drawer ejects fine but is a little fiddly to close, needing to be pushed down as well as in (hence the four stars). The bundled software works really well for archiving and allows backups to span multiple discs with ease. I would recommend this device for anyone wanting to archive to BluRay.

Slow to compare 21 Sept. 2013

This drive is very slow to read data. When I went to install the software that came on the included disc it took over 2 hours.

Doing a compare (not a verify) and it took over 3 hours to check an 8GB folder.

Couldn't Be Happier! 30 Jan. 2014

Choosing a Blu-Ray drive for my 2011 iMac was a nightmare. I was torn between aesthetics and practicality and I must admit, I did waiver about buying this drive as it's not a looker, but I am so glad I did.
First off the bat, this is just plug and play, no fuss whatsoever and my Mac recognized the drive as soon as the unit switches on.
Second, the added software Rewind, is excellent and makes archiving a breeze. As far as I am aware, this is the only supplied software that works with Mac, all the other manufacturers include Windows only software.
Third, only one cable required, so minimal clutter
Fourth, I ripped some CD's to iTunes and the speed blew my internal DVD writer away and archiving nearly 20GB of photos took just 20 minutes.
Fifth, everything you need is in the box including 2 USB cables in case you need extra power, $50 software and even a blank BD.

If you want your writer to look pretty then maybe look at the new Pioneer models, but when you factor in all the extras, this is a real bargain.
Solid Unit 15 April 2014

I have used this unit for a few weeks now and it seems to work just fine and is very quiet for the most part . I have used Digistor disks and Verbatim and no failures when burning . I gave the Digistor 4 stars due to it's size and weight if were going to carry this around with you . It also uses 2 usb ports but I haven't had to use 2 usb ports yet . The documentation is very poor and I wrote to tech support to get more information on the battery and there is a lot not mentioned you should know so make a list and write them with your questions . By the way their email support was very good . For example the battery does charge when on one cable if the unit is not being used and it also charges when the unit is switched off so these are all important things to know . If the battery were to fail the unit should still work as long as both cables are plugged in to usb ports . If you are using a usb hub you might not be able to plug both ends into it and have enough power depending on your hub . Hope this helps someone .
