Book Description

An unparalleled account of ordinary life in wartime Britain.

From January 1st 1939, to the end of the Second World War, Joan Strange kept a daily diary of her experiences. Alongside her record she collected news cuttings, photos and cartoons of the time.

Her notes range from the dramatic events of the world stage to the domestic difficulties of having in wartime Worthing. Comments on her allotment lie alongside speeches from Hitler and Churchill. The diary is a delightful mix of the mundane and the momentous and reveals much about the English character — quiet courage and unfailing optimism.

‘Most surprising.. . it has a universality…the voice of the ordinary citizen.’

This is the latest book to be added to my extensive collection about life on the Home Front. It does not disappoint, I haven't finished reading it yet but it looks to become a favourite.

After a very short while,I felt as though I was in the war with Joan.
Casually but expertly written and full of detail,Joan expresses her feelings and sentiments of living every day through WW2.
You won't put it don once you start reading!

I am half way through reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the home front during WW11. Joan Strange writes in a good way that gets one involved with her life. Also quite amusing and ideal to relax to.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intrigued by the Home Front in WW 2 29 May 2015
By Lulu
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having read a number of books on the subject of the home front from a woman's perspective, for me this was not one of the best. I found it took a while to get into the flow of it, and also that there was not a lot of information about how the writer coped with the everyday effects of WW 2 on the domestic scene, compared with Nella Last's diaries for example, or Anne McEntegart's The Milk Lady at New Park Farm. However it does add a different view. The illustrations were not very good quality, some indistinct, and the writing on some illegible, which was a pity.
