Nobody who has ever lived will have eagerly waited for Anubis II, the sequel to the first Anubis game, not because Anubis I was awful, (which Anubis II undoubtedly is) but because this game is not a sequel, and Anubis I never existed. This game is in fact called `Anubis the Second,' and the way that the title in the box in perhaps intentionally misleading.

Anubis II therefore has no first game on which it can build its reputation, and the label `Popcorn Arcade' on the box does not help either. It was used by DDI, (a company that once controlled 1/3 of the UK casual family games market for the Wii using a primitive development tool called the G.O.D.S. engine) which demised in 2009 amidst calls for Nintendo to refuse publishing the company's games on the basis that they were damaging the reputation of the Wii. In the credits for Anubis II, they thank themselves for this!

The game itself, considered a carbon copy of another Popcorn Arcade game called Ninjabread Men, was first released late in the life of the PS2. It suffers firstly from the fact that although there are a large number of poorly designed puzzles, there are very few levels. Another gameplay issue is that the plot is as shallow as the combat system, which involves approaching an enemy, one type of which is a collection of pink pixels, then hacking and slashing until it replaces itself with a pile of bones. Combat is also unnecessary, as Anubis runs so fast that he can simply avoid his enemies and complete his objectives.

Only a few words are necessary to explain how the rest of Anubis II is; the graphics are more than 15 years out of date, the presentation and lasting appeal are practically non existent and the woefully out-of-place upbeat music consists of a few bars which are repeated.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't let the cover fool you 14 Mar 2013
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game without reading reviews and thought it looked ok. 10 seconds in and I wish I had never parted with my money. The music is terrible. The graphics are terrible. The game is terrible and should never have been created in the first place. This is a terrible PS2 games and even some PS1 games could beat this one by more than a mile. If this was the last game on earth I would not play it. Do yourself a favour- don't buy!
