This the first part of a Limited Edition of TWO DEAD CAN DANCE BOXED SETS. Part 1 features a newly designed BLACK box containing the debut DCD album, the Garden Of The Arcane Delights EP, the follow up album Spleen & Ideal and for the very first time on vinyl the band's first John Peel Session from 1983. A true cult act, in every sense of the word, DCD are 4AD 700;s biggest selling act.

Amazing Audio, Terrible Packaging

This set is an excellent collection of early Dead Can Dance on high-quality vinyl. The audio on each of the albums is crystal clear and beautifully represented, making the set worth the purchase for the audio quality alone. If I were rating this on the audio alone, it would be an easy 5-star rating.
However, the original manufacturer's packaging is so terrible that I'm forced to give this product an overall 3-star rating, which hurts to do, trust me. The first package I received for my original order was completely busted. The outer box top was ripped at 2 corners, as was the inner box, and all of the internal jackets were ripped on the top. Inside each jacket the paper sleeves were also ripped on the left and right sides. Most of the vinyl itself was ok (although due to all the sleeve damage there was paper all over each album, requiring multiple cleanings), however there was one vinyl that was heavily scratched from rubbing against the paper sleeve.
Amazon was great and shipped me out another version when I reported this one as damaged, but unfortunately the 2nd copy wasn't much better. With the exception of the inner and outer boxes being in tact, all of the inner jackets and sleeves exhibited the same ripped edges, and one album had some sort of dimpling directly on the vinyl.
It's frustrating for a company to go through the trouble of designing and mastering such an excellent representation of early DCD only to cut corners during packaging and shipping. Had the vinyl come in protective rice paper sleeves, as do the Mobility Fidelity releases, I would imagine much of the inner damage could have been avoided. I don't know caused the outer box damage but it appeared to happen during packaging as the shipped version arrived shrink-wrapped and looked fine.
Bottom line: If you love DCD and would like these amazing albums on vinyl, this set is worth it for the music. But if you're buying this as a collectable item only, the two versions I received will disappoint you. I hope box set #2 is a more professional product.
