Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The D'Addario Fingerboard Appliqué was developed by noted music educator Peter Stoney to help make the instrument easier to learn, play, and enjoy. Its design promotes proper finger placement using a tactile approach, allowing the player to feel the contact point for the note. The Appliqué is also an ideal tool to easily add subtle frets to the violin, making it easier for players of fretted instruments to cross over to violin, and also expanding the instrument's flexibility of use with modern performance styles. This model fits a 4/4 size violin or 14" viola. The Black version makes it virtually invisible to see.

The Fingerboard Appliqué is available in two styles: an "Optic" version with the lines colored gold to provide an additional visual cue, and a "Tactile" version that is solid black and nearly invisible on the fingerboard. The Appliqué installs in just a few minutes and is easily removed when no longer needed. Available in three scale lengths: 328mm for 4/4 size violin, 304mm for 3/4 size violin and 286mm for 1/2 size violin.

D'Addario, the world's largest manufacturer of musical instrument strings, is known worldwide for unsurpassed quality and consistency. I like it also because it is not apparent that it is here. Very subtle, allows you to feel the frets without being obvious. Well designed.

It's called "tactile," so I figured that meant I'd be able to actually feel it while I played and that would help me find the correct finger positions on my viola(which I am thankful that it managed to fit reasonably). However, I find it very difficult to navigate through trying to feel where the "frets" are, and I find myself trying to visually find them, which is pretty much impossible in low light. I'd suggest trying to learn with the optic version of this product.

As a beginning mandolin player, I thought I'd give violin a shot since they tune the same. Wow, it is tougher on so many levels! The difficulty of seeing the neck. The bowing from one string to another. And not having frets!! Even the simple songs I knew on mandolin were difficult although the tuning is identical. Thus I looked and found this stick-on fret overlay. Right off, I think every beginner should have one. It's tricky enough to learn bowing without having to guess where to finger the neck, too.

The company makes two versions. This one, you can feel the "frets." The other is purely visual. I'd suggest this one because you can also see and feel the frets. Another manufacturer makes a visual version but they're multi-colored. I think your violin would end up looking like a toy (think "Guitar Hero.").

I haven't taken it off yet because I just put it on. The instuctions say you can't re-apply after removal. I really don't think it will leave any stickiness because it just barely adheres. The edges could stand to stick a little better, in my opinion. Perhaps I'll try putting some rubber bands around the neck for a night to see if it helps. It's really not a problem, though. Don't let that worry you in the least since it's just a tiny bit at each fret.

Anyway, I quickly found I could do a much better job playing one of my mandolin songs on the violin. It made a world of difference. I think it'll really help me to learn fingering locations while I get better at bowing.

UPDATE. I initially gave this five stars but reduced it to three for a major reason. It just didn't stick very good. It constantly came loose and deadened the strings. Like, if you're fingering the third "fret" but it is loose and touching the string lightly at the 8th.
