Reviews

This DVD is an import from The Netherlands, which plays in English. Summary: A TV mini-series adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, following the life of young Copperfield as he grows up under the care of the cruel Murdstones, travels to London where he meets the gentle Macawbers and the unctuous Uriah Heep, and falls in love with and marries the pampered Dora.

Copper not Gold! 17 Jan 2012

A Good production that could and should have been a lot better! Simon Callow, great Dickensian that he is, overacts as Micawber, but Oliver Cotton naturally dark and brooding, is perfect as Mr Murdstone. Also seen at his best is another great actor (who in my opinion does not get enough roles,) John Savident perfect in the role of fearful school headmaster Creakle.
The sets are lavish enough, and its sad that such great thespians were not used better. Nevertheless, as a great Dickens fan I enjoyed it. Its worth adding to any Charles Dickens Collection!

I cannot agree with the earlier reviewer. This BBC mini-series at 250 minutes long allows a fuller treatment of the novel than any other I have seen. The grown-up David is perhaps a little weak but Uriah Heep and Mister Dick were outstanding, Mr Pegotty actually made a good stab at an East Anglian accent, to name just a few excellent performances. Simon Callow certainly hams up Mr. Micawber rather too much but generally I commend this version to anyone who really loves the novel.

Awful 11 April 2010
By Dynamo
Format:DVD
I have never seen such a poor version of David Copperfield. The actor who plays the older David is such a softy. I can not take this serious. I have never seen such poor acting. Usually BBC delivers high standing quality acting. This is, however, poor. Luckily mr Dickens himself could not see this shameful performance.
