Book Description

Dare to Dream, Play to win – Life: Learning to Play, Learning to Win is a charming story about 9-year-old Cameron, an avid football fan, who has difficulty reading. Cameron cannot focus on his schoolwork because he spends his days fantasizing about being an NFL star. This causes him to make some bad decisions that prevent him from reaching his potential in school. Later on, Cameron meets a professional football player, Johnny, who inspires him to work harder and “dare to dream.” With help from Johnny, his mother, and even his little sister, Cameron learns about teamwork, honesty, and determination. This book brings to light the importance of reading for personal growth. It inspires kids to aim for the sky in order to be successful in academics as well as sports. Children who struggle to focus in school or in any academic endeavor will find this compelling book especially meaningful.

Review: I absolutely LOVE books that teach a lesson without being pushy. This story is about a young boy who falls in love with Football, so much so that he chooses to not do well in school. The story ends with a great lesson about education, and the story is illustrated very nicely. My oldest daughter, who is 7, loved this book because she loves to read but is having problems understanding some books. She enjoyed this because even though she loves to dance and wants to become a professional tap dancer, she also must have goals. I'd recommend all parents to read this book to their school aged kids!

If you are looking for a book to inspire a child you know to read, look no further than "Dare to Dream, Play to win – Life: Learning to Play, Learning to Win." It is an inspirational story about a child who has trouble reading. The main character is nine-year-old Cameron, a huge football fan. Cameron's dream is to be a football star, so much so, that his day dreaming stops him from being able to focus on schoolwork. Cameron ultimately makes some bad decisions in school. Fortunately, he meets a professional football player who inspires him to work hard in everything, including school. The plot is well-paced, and it is wonderful to read about Cameron's growth as a person. The lessons in the story are presented in a way that feels natural and inspirational. There a number of children's books that just "preach" at the reader. This is not the case. The lessons about hard work and honesty, among other things, are integrated into the story perfectly. Children reading this book will be inspired to read more and understand its importance in personal growth. This is a must-read for any child who has trouble getting motivated to read!

I feel that no review is worth much without a point of reference. I help teach reading to 1st graders who struggle with it. I am not a parent, but I have 36 nieces and nephews who frequent my home. I also teach guitar to students I pick specifically because academia isn't their strong suit. I've seen a lot of motivational children’s books in my time, and most of them are so-so and only good enough to get the job done. However, I really liked this book.

I don’t know why it is, but many boys seem to have an uphill battle with reading. It can be a real challenge to get them to work on reading comprehension especially, so when I am working with them one of the exercises I like to do is read to them and have them tell me about what we have read. This book excels in this particular way. The kids I have read it to are really captivated by the manga style illustrations, and they can easily relate to Cameron. Mrs. Whisker is not portrayed as some evil ogre who only exists to make Cameron’s life miserable, and Michael is not a typical meat head jock. Johnny is a great role model character. Altogether, it creates a situation for them to succeed with comprehension because they are engaged with the content and can’t wait to tell me about what I read to them.

Bottom line: This is a great book to read with kids, and it is a great book for older kids to read; especially those who are a little uninspired right now.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great educational and inspirational book for children! 13 Feb. 2014

»DARE TO DREAM, PLAY TO WIN - Life: Learning to Play, Learning to Win« is a great educational and also inspirational book for children who are lacking a little motivation for reading. Through the interesting story about a 9 year old boy with reading difficulties and beautiful illustrations this book teaches children valuable lessons about the importance of reading, education and also about a balance between education and other interests.

I think there is a paucity of such books and that’s why books like this one are so much more appreciated. I really love it and would highly recommend it to all parents and their little children.
