I really enjoyed this book. The wealth of personal testimony brought this gripping story to life, lending a real insight into what it must have been like to take part. It was especially fascinating to read about the agonies of leadership and how power politics at the top interfered with military strategy. This is no dry history, but rather a sobering reminder of tragedy of war and a testament to human endurance and determination. The different approaches of the Americans, Brits and Germans to waging war make captivating reading and is highly relevant to our world today. For an engaging narrative, you couldn't do better than pick up this book.
I would liken this book to a fine coating of snow on the landscape. It covers all aspects as the title suggests but does not get bogged down in fine detail. In just 327 pages Andrew Williams has written a very short, yet clear and balanced account of the western allies advance from D-Day onwards. By avoiding jingoism and overly expressed self opinions he has produced a fine book which is easily read over a few nights and a recommended addition to your bookshelf.
