Conserves Energy

The DGS-1005D 5-Port Gigabit Switch helps you conserve energy automatically through several methods. It automatically powers down ports that have no link, allowing the switch to save substantial amounts of power by cutting power usage for unused ports or ports connected to computers that have been shut down. It can also detect connected cable lengths, and adjusts power usage accordingly, helping you save energy without affecting networking performance.

Plug-and-Play Installation

The switch integrates seamlessly with your existing network equipment, be it Ethernet, Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet, dispensing of the need to replace any hardware or software. All you need to do is plug the cables into the switch and your network is up and running in a matter of minutes.

Gigabit Connection for the Home or Small Office

The DGS-1005D offers an economical way for home offices and small to medium businesses to benefit from the increased bandwidth of Gigabit Ethernet. It provides 5 Gigabit ports for fast server deployment to meet increasing network loads.

D-Link DGS-1005D auto detects your connected cable lengths, lowering power output appropriately for short connectings and saving you energy.
The DGS-1005D detects your cable lengths and adjusts its power consumption, helping to save you power and money. Click here to see a larger version.

Using existing low-cost Cat5, or higher, copper twisted-pair wires as the transmission media, the five ports allow you to instantly upgrade your servers to Gigabit capability without requiring the installation of new, expensive fibre cables. The Gigabit ports provide dedicated bandwidth for your servers running at 2000 Mbps full-duplex. This gives workstations bottleneck-free paths to simultaneously access server data.

IEEE 802.1p QoS

QoS prioritises network traffic so that time-sensitive data is delivered efficiently, even during bursts of high data traffic. This helps ensure an optimal experience for streaming media, VoIP calls, and online gaming.

Cable Diagnostics Function

The D-Link Cable Diagnostics Function enables users to efficiently detect cable conditions through the LED display on the front-panel. Users can determine whether the pin connections of their cables' connectors are correct, facilitating network troubleshooting.

IEEE 802.3x Flow Control

This function allows the flow of data to be adjusted between switch and server, to ensure a reliable data transfer. At 2000 Mbps full duplex, the switch provides high-speed data pipes to your servers with minimum data transfer loss.

Auto-negotiation of MDI/MDIX Cross Over

All ports support auto-negotiation of MDI/MDIX cross over. This eliminates the need for cross over cables or uplink ports. Any port can simply plug to a server, a hub or a switch, using the usual straight-through twisted-pair cable.

The D-Link DGS-1005D is a desktop switch that offers an inexpensive alternative to fibre optics for the SOHO and small and medium business (SMB). Increasing network loads can be handled with the increased bandwidth of Gigabit Ethernet.

    Gigabit connectivity without fibre
The switch provides 5 Gigabit ports in the familiar Ethernet format, so it works seamlessly with existing network cables (Cat5 or higher). Up to 2000 Mbps can be achieved in full-duplex mode, giving workstations bottleneck-free access to server data.

    Plug-and-Play installation
All there is to do is plug the cables into the switch.
All ports support both straight-through and crossover cable types, eliminating the need for an uplink port.
With 10/100/1000 Mbps auto-sensing, no configuration is required.

How it works? By automatically detecting the cable length and sensing the on/off status of connected devices this is how the Green Ethernet range reduces power consumption. Learn more about Green Ethernet at http://www.dlink.co.uk/greenethernet/

Bought this since I'd run out of switch ports on my small office network. Works perfectly and being unmanaged needs no installation or set-up (short of plugging it in to an available socket and attaching your patch leads). The switch autosenses 10/100/1000 connections and indicates the connection speed on its LED display. My two main computers are aging Pentium4s with UDMA6/ATA133 controllers/disks. My structured cabling is 100 Mbit CAT5 (not CAT5E). I bought a gigabit switch for future proofing but didn't expect any significant performance improvement because of storage bottlenecks and cabling limitations. I was pleasantly surprised when the switch's LEDs reported it was game to try gigabit throughput. Qcheck reports a throughput of 727Mbps although the 1kB data limit seems too low for a reliable test at this speed. More importantly, I'm getting a real world throughput of 250 - 350 Mbps (disk to disk). In use, file transfers have speeded up noticeably and my network backups (30 gigabytes) are completing 25% faster than before. Since the switch drops its power consumption when idle I'm saving power. For me the cheap, white plastic case isn't too easy on the eye (I prefer Netgear's Prosafe metal cases) but other than that I have no complaints. I've had mixed reliability from Dlink products in the past but I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt and recommend this for the cost (27GBP when I bought it).

When I ordered my one back in 2009 I also ended up with the non green version.

Today I got myself the "Green" version which is white in colour and has a more compact switchmode power supply (5 volts output).

I have a pretty accurate wattmeter and have compared the two models power consumption.

With all five ports used, 4 at 1Gb and 1 at 100Megs

Old Model = 6.5 watts
New Model = 3.2 watts

So both models are pretty good and compared to the average Sky box that eats 20 watts in standby both are pretty green.

Lastly, I would say the white one looks nicer.

These are very good at expanding your existing routers. I have bought a few D-Link ones over the last 5 years and they have given really good service. Only one stopped working after 24/7 constant use, so I can't complain. I'm now standardising on these newer (Green) models, to try and reduce electricity consumption and general wear and tear on the box itself. My only problem was that I've had to return the box to the seller 'FindMemory' because they are sending out the older (non-Green) boxes, in spite of the title, picture and description all referring to the newer model. I guess they don't actually have any green ones, because they preferred to give me my money back, rather than replace it with the advertised model!

Having just installed this device, I've been testing my network performance with the iperf tool. The results might be useful for anyone considering which networking strategy would work best in their home:

- DGS-1005D (this device): 930-950Mb/s unidirectional, combined 1.3Gb/s bidirectional
- BT Homehub 10/100 router: 94Mb/s unidirectional, combined 172Mb/s bidirectional
- Devolo Powerline 200: 50-80Mb/s (varies by location) total available bandwidth for all devices
- BT Homehub Wireless N: 24-35Mb/s (varies by location) total available bandwidth for all devices

The relatively poor bidirectional speed on this switch is almost certainly due to an extended 8 meter run of Cat5e cable - not true Gigabit standard - that's buried beneath my floorboards and can't be replaced easily. Despite that cable, I'm achieving unidirectional speeds that are 10 times faster than my BT Homehub can provide, and 20-35 times faster than Powerline or Wireless N. If you have a large media library to backup or a bandwidth-hungry family, this is the way to go.

Although there are cheaper switches available, the extremely low power consumption offered by this device offsets the cost. The green model's 3-4W saving suggested by another reviewer represents an annual electricity cost of around £3, so a cheaper switch might well prove more expensive in the long run.

D-Link DGS-1005D 5 Port 10/100/1000Mb Gigabit Switch

The whole device is very compact. The top is slightly curved from side to side and contains the LEDs that indicate the status of each port. The rear of the device has the 5 Ethernet ports and also the socket for the supplied power plug.

Installing could not be easier: plug in the power lead; plug in the Ethernet network cables; you're done. As expected, it worked first time. To check it out I did a backup of my wife's computer using Synchredible and checking the data flow with BitmeterII. The backup completed far faster than previously and the BitmeterII barchart showed that data was being shifted across the network as fast as is probably possible, considering only CAT5E cabling is installed rather than the recommended CAT6.

The other big plus with this device is the advertised energy savings. This is the first switch I've seen that bigs this up. Apparently the circuitry on each port switches itself into standby when the port is not active. The claiming is for up to 85% electricity savings. Though I have no practical way of proving it, I'm prepared to take their word. It should keep the device a whole lot cooler as well.

So, overall, very pleased with my purchase. At the price it seems unbeatable value for money. Only time will tell if it proves reliable. No reason why it shouldn't. There's really not much that can go wrong. If you have the need for more connections, they make an 8 port version as well.
