5-port Gigabit Green Technology Desktop Switch

The DGS-1005D desktop switch introduces the concept of energy conservation in the networking arena for small offices, home offices, and small and medium businesses. The DGS-1005D is an unmanaged Gigabit switch that provides plug-and-play Gigabit connectivity. It features energy-saving features, allowing up to 27% less power consumption*. Each of the 5 Gigabit ports feature 802.3x flow control, auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDI-X, making it ideal for fast upgrades without requiring the installation of expensive fibre cables or complex reconfiguration.

*Figure based on a scenario assuming that PCs are used for 10 hours a day, powered off 14 hours a day and connected to the switch using 20m cables.

Think Green

The D-Link 5-Port Gigabit Switch is part of D-Link's series of small office/home office devices that make use of D-Link's Green Technology, providing energy savings, reduced heat, and a longer product life without sacrificing operational performance or functionality. An efficient power adapter (EnergyStar Level V qualified), minimised use of harmful substances (RoHS compliant), and recyclable packaging make this switch truly environmentally friendly.

Conserves Energy

The DGS-1005D 5-Port Gigabit Switch helps you conserve energy automatically through several methods. It automatically powers down ports that have no link, allowing the switch to save substantial amounts of power by cutting power usage for unused ports or ports connected to computers that have been shut down. It can also detect connected cable lengths, and adjusts power usage accordingly, helping you save energy without affecting networking performance.

Plug-and-Play Installation

The switch integrates seamlessly with your existing network equipment, be it Ethernet, Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet, dispensing of the need to replace any hardware or software. All you need to do is plug the cables into the switch and your network is up and running in a matter of minutes.

Gigabit Connection for the Home or Small Office

The DGS-1005D offers an economical way for home offices and small to medium businesses to benefit from the increased bandwidth of Gigabit Ethernet. It provides 5 Gigabit ports for fast server deployment to meet increasing network loads.

D-Link DGS-1005D auto detects your connected cable lengths, lowering power output appropriately for short connectings and saving you energy.
The DGS-1005D detects your cable lengths and adjusts its power consumption, helping to save you power and money. Click here to see a larger version.

Using existing low-cost Cat5, or higher, copper twisted-pair wires as the transmission media, the five ports allow you to instantly upgrade your servers to Gigabit capability without requiring the installation of new, expensive fibre cables. The Gigabit ports provide dedicated bandwidth for your servers running at 2000 Mbps full-duplex. This gives workstations bottleneck-free paths to simultaneously access server data.

IEEE 802.1p QoS

QoS prioritises network traffic so that time-sensitive data is delivered efficiently, even during bursts of high data traffic. This helps ensure an optimal experience for streaming media, VoIP calls, and online gaming.

Cable Diagnostics Function

The D-Link Cable Diagnostics Function enables users to efficiently detect cable conditions through the LED display on the front-panel. Users can determine whether the pin connections of their cables' connectors are correct, facilitating network troubleshooting.

IEEE 802.3x Flow Control

This function allows the flow of data to be adjusted between switch and server, to ensure a reliable data transfer. At 2000 Mbps full duplex, the switch provides high-speed data pipes to your servers with minimum data transfer loss.

Auto-negotiation of MDI/MDIX Cross Over

All ports support auto-negotiation of MDI/MDIX cross over. This eliminates the need for cross over cables or uplink ports. Any port can simply plug to a server, a hub or a switch, using the usual straight-through twisted-pair cable.

Bought this since I'd run out of switch ports on my small office network. Works perfectly and being unmanaged needs no installation or set-up (short of plugging it in to an available socket and attaching your patch leads). The switch autosenses 10/100/1000 connections and indicates the connection speed on its LED display. My two main computers are aging Pentium4s with UDMA6/ATA133 controllers/disks. My structured cabling is 100 Mbit CAT5 (not CAT5E). I bought a gigabit switch for future proofing but didn't expect any significant performance improvement because of storage bottlenecks and cabling limitations. I was pleasantly surprised when the switch's LEDs reported it was game to try gigabit throughput. Qcheck reports a throughput of 727Mbps although the 1kB data limit seems too low for a reliable test at this speed. More importantly, I'm getting a real world throughput of 250 - 350 Mbps (disk to disk). In use, file transfers have speeded up noticeably and my network backups (30 gigabytes) are completing 25% faster than before. Since the switch drops its power consumption when idle I'm saving power. For me the cheap, white plastic case isn't too easy on the eye (I prefer Netgear's Prosafe metal cases) but other than that I have no complaints. I've had mixed reliability from Dlink products in the past but I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt and recommend this for the cost (27GBP when I bought it).

When I ordered my one back in 2009 I also ended up with the non green version.

Today I got myself the "Green" version which is white in colour and has a more compact switchmode power supply (5 volts output).

I have a pretty accurate wattmeter and have compared the two models power consumption.

With all five ports used, 4 at 1Gb and 1 at 100Megs

Old Model = 6.5 watts
New Model = 3.2 watts

So both models are pretty good and compared to the average Sky box that eats 20 watts in standby both are pretty green.

Lastly, I would say the white one looks nicer.

These are very good at expanding your existing routers. I have bought a few D-Link ones over the last 5 years and they have given really good service. Only one stopped working after 24/7 constant use, so I can't complain. I'm now standardising on these newer (Green) models, to try and reduce electricity consumption and general wear and tear on the box itself. My only problem was that I've had to return the box to the seller 'FindMemory' because they are sending out the older (non-Green) boxes, in spite of the title, picture and description all referring to the newer model. I guess they don't actually have any green ones, because they preferred to give me my money back, rather than replace it with the advertised model!
