I've had a media centre in the lounge for 8+ years, started with Windows XP Media Centre Edition and tried nearly all the others and finally started using Boxee software. I have been waiting for the Boxee box as my media centre was noisy, not very power efficient, expensive, drivers problems,...etc.

Initially when I heard the price, I thought D-Link are joking and actually decided to buy Western Digital Live HD box but decided to return it after few days as it was extremely limited compared to Boxee. Last week I decided not to waste more time and buy the Boxee box, what a great decision that was.

Pros:
1. It plays back every format under the sun.
2. The remote control is genius, and contrary to what one of the reviewers said it DOES have numbers.
3. The online content is fantastic, and contains live data from BBC iPlayer, Youtube, channel 4 & 5, Engadget, TED and loads more.
4. Open architecture allows additional plugins to be developed so it's future proof (the box already comes with 130 plugins already installed!).
5. Automatically retrieves information about your movies from the internet and puts a nice picture icon of your movies. It also does the same with the music (gets band pictures and info from the internet).
6. It supports Arabic subtitles. I know this doesn't matter to a lot of people but tha fact that it supports Arabic means it will also support all other right-to-left languages like Hebrew,...etc. The box can actually download subtitles from the internet while the movie is playing.
7. Supports MKV with subtitles, chapters and all the other great features.
8. Supports Blu Ray ISO. I haven't tested many features as I don't have many Blu-Ray ISOs but everything worked in the ones I tested.

Cons:
1. As one of the reviews said, some online content is simply a shortcut to a web page that opens in Boxee browser. Some websites are designed and tested to work with major browsers like IE, Firefox,..etc so sometimes they don't work very well with the Boxee browser.
2. As this box has a browser, a mouse would have been a very nice addition as navigating using the keyboard is painful, though possible.

And finally I'm borrowing this quote from Andy C's review: It is probably still a device best suited to the techie crowd but in time as the interface becomes more polished and the online content improves it should be a great device, in fact I suspect this kind of kit will completely take over our home entertainment needs in the coming years.

A major firmware update is coming early December so the box will even get better.

First off just wanted to say, my Boxee Box has just been delivered this morning. And I'm absolutely over the moon with it. For a long time I've been using Apple TV (cracked version) to stream movies stored on my NAS box at home, however it wouldnt cope very well with HD files and anything really over 4GB in size.

The Boxee Box absolutely nails these to perfection. Initially I was a little skeptical, and sure, it's a fairly high price but in my honest opinion it's worth every penny and I'm very happy with it.

For info, I've thrown every media type I can find on my NAS box at this piece of kit and it's played them all without any kicups at all. MKV, M2KV, ISO, AVI, MPEG etc etc etc - the list goes on and on, all played without any stuttering etc. It even plays full HD movies i.e 9GB movie files, which my Apple TV just simply couldnt handle. BTW this Boxee Box is FULL 1080 HD, Apple TV was only 720p - So again Boxee Box wins there.

The REAL big test was I had a HD Bluray movie stored on my NAS (30GB movie file!!!!!) which my Apple TV could only dream of managing to play, I wasnt sure even a file of this size Boxee could cope, but again, playback was absolutely flawless.

10/10 and HIGHLY recommended.

Hope this helps.

I already have two Netgear media players both of which work well for playing files stored on my network but the amount of online content they can play is limited to a some internet radio stations and prerecorded US news sites. So I was keen to find a device that would allow easy access to the wealth of online video and music that I can already access with my computer.

I had read about Boxee and so first downloaded the software version, free and available for most operating systems. This almost exactly mimics the interface of the Boxee Box and allows you to try out the apps available and get a feel for the way the Boxee works.

The Boxee Box is small in size, shaped like cube of about 6 inches but with a corner removed, and has HDMI, two USB, gigabyte ethernet, optical and analog audio our sockets. It also supports wireless N wifi. There is a recessed and hard to find Off/On switch on the top although the device can be switched on from the remote. The remote is unusual and innovative in that it has a small number of transport keys on one side and a QWERTY keyboard the other, also it is wirelessly connected to the Boxee rather than by infra red and so need not be pointed at it to connect. External storage can be connected by USB and these can be made accessible as networked drives to other devices.

Local files play well from the network but seem to take an age to buffer before playing but once they do the playback over ethernet - I have not needed to use it over wifi myself - is stable and reliable. Indexing of the local files seems slow and I do not think it can be made to update the index more than once a day. One interesting feature is the way when indexing the local files it attempts to download pictures of the DVD boxes which it displays when scrolling through the local file list. However, it often gets this wrong or fails to display any image, but it is a nice touch when working as it should.

Another problem, or perhaps it could be argued as a feature, is that it follows the image format of the original file - 4:3 etc and does not automatcally strech it to fill the widescreen. . Of course you can define the image format of your TV display in Settings but this does not seem to be dynamic in use. Perhaps this can be adjusted inelsewhere settings but I have not yet found how

So, as a player of local files it is good but in general I prefer my Netgear NTV550 Network Audio/Video Player or Netgear EVA9100 Digital Entertainer ExpressEVA9500.

However, it is a player of videos and music from the internet that this player really comes into its own.
It is modular in nature and a large number of apps are pre installed by Boxee/D-Link and even more are available to be installed from the internet These apps allow access to archives of movies, TV programs, networked cameras, live TV feeds etc. Some of these apps have their own sophisticated interfaces and allow seamless display of their content, others are little more than front ends for Youtube content. Sometimes a feed will jump to a Youtube or similar page and usually it then jumps automatically to play in full screen. Sometimes this fails and you have to use the cursor keys to move the mouse to begin play. Such instances are rare but illustrate how the Boxee is in large part nothing more than a dedicated computer.

It will also play RSS feeds and from a `Watch Later' feed that you can define online

Be aware that due to the very nature of the internet sometimes these archives will be offline, the connection may be slow or stuttering, some apps that install and play on the software version may fail to do so on the Boxee Box. In general they work well it must be said. Also some sources, particularly those of the US TV networks may be geo-restricted but this can be circumvented by a proxy server or VPN which can be be defined in Settings. I use a service called Astrill and this works well with the Boxee.

The software version of Boxee integrates nicely with the hardware version. After signing in changes made to one are mirrored on the other. Also, there is a Boxee bookmarklet that can be installed on your web browser that allows you to select videos to be viewed later on the Boxee Box `Watch Later' feed..

The Good
Unmatched access to internet based video and audio files
Fully configurable by means of third party apps
Integrates with both web browser to find files to play
Software version of Boxee integrates with hardware device
Plays FLV and ISO files
Compact size
Regular firmware updates add features
Plays full 1080p High Definition
Allows use of proxy servers or VNC connections
Download the software version of Boxee to test it before purchase
Can update Facebook and Twitter about files accessed
Allows VPN/Proxy network connection to defaeat geo-restrictions

The Bad
Startup delay of several seconds when playing local files
Slow indexing of local files
Index file images generated for local files sometimes incorrect
No SCART output
Some apps are buggy and may not run
Internet based content may be unreliable.
Interface can be confusing at first.
Some videos jump to Youtube and you have to use the cursor to play

If all you want is to play files you have on your computer or networked storage then there may be cheaper and perhaps better options available. If you want to be able to access the vast archives of video and music availabkle on the internet then this is by far the best choice out there.
