Linux - Ubuntu 9/10,

This review is from: D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510 - Network adapter - PCI - 802.11b, 802.11g (Personal Computers)
I recently replaced my old computer and updated it to a quad-core system running Windows 7 with IE8. Unfortunately IE8 does not seem to run as well as I would hope and it is difficult to get rid of as it seems to be pretty well embedded in Windows 7. I decided to rebuild my old system as a back-up using Linux as an OS, particularly Ubuntu 9/10 with Mozilla Firefox. Having read as much as I could find on wireless adaptors, a good recommendation was the D-Link DWL-G510 and I am pleased to say that it worked straight from the box.I have no trouble with reception and the response is equal to my new computer with the Windows 7 setup.D-Link DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adaptor

Half decent......,

Heard good things about the make and decided why not spend the extra money and get something half decent.
Unfortunately thats what I got, something that was only half decent. The router and my PC sit within 3 meters of each other, and I have noticed a significant difference between wired and this wireless. Hoping to have as few wires as possible trailing through the room I opted for wireless, but have gone back to wired. I noticed a marked decease in streaming speeds on sites like youtube. For me this wasn't a great purchase but I am sure there are far worse out there. Its said that you can automatically connect other products in the range together with no fuss, this maybe one of the few reasons to chose the product which is why it got 3 and not 1 star.

Rock solid, in both Windows and Linux,

Bought this to work with a new D-Link DI-524 wireless router. Works great, with the signal cutting diagonally and through the floor of my 2-story suburban house. I am using an old 6db directional patch antenna (from Hawking Technology; I bought it years ago) and the connection is flawless. Tested in both Windows XP SP2 & Ubuntu Linux (Breezy 5.10 & kernel 2.6).

Works Fine in my PC,

I got this for free from a friend who no longer needed it anymore, and I stuck in it my PC and there haven't been any hangups or connection problems related to this card. As far as I know.
The installation was pretty straight forward and didn't cause me any problems. The upgrades since I got it have been easy to deal with and it usually only takes a reboot to make it work with the upgrade. The range is fine for me, but the wireless signal only has to go through one wall. This is much better than stringing ethernet cable above door ways or even drilling through walls. I like it. I'd recommend this to others as the price is small and it actually works. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful:

The absolute worst experience!,

This card is ended up being more trouble than it's worth. After receiving the card, I immediately installed it. After 10 minutes, my computer stopped communicating with the network... not just the Internet, I couldn't even ping computers on the LAN. Even though the status shows "connected" with "very good" signal, the card will not communicate. The only way to get communication back was to reboot. The problem is that this card never stayed "online" and tech support was absolutely no help. By the way, this is a known issue.. just do an Internet search for: "DWL-G510 Connection problems" and you will find very frustrated people trying to get this thing to work. Most just gave up, and go with other brands. All I can say is, it's not worth it, when there are so many other cards out there that are truly "plug and play". I ended up getting rid of mine as well.
By the way, D-Link is aware of this issue, but has not been able to correct the problem. I cannot believe that it has been allowed to go on as long as it has. I implore all buyers to beware!! --Update-- I did end up getting rid of this card. As you will see if you do a search on this particular card model, it's hit or miss. For some people, it works just fine. For many others it causes headaches and unnecessary time-spent troubleshooting. If you do get this card and find issues, my recommendation is to not bother. On the upside, I did find a card that has done everything that I need. The card is similar in that it is a PCI card. The manufacturer is "trendnet" Take a look, they offer a similar wireless-g card that is less expensive. I purchased two and each card only took a few minutes to install. To date, I've had great success with the trendnet product. Very happy with it! |
