This Network Storage Enclosure provides small businesses with a central network point to store, share and back up valuable files. With 5 hard drive modes available including RAID0/1/5 and Active Directory support, this enclosure is ideal for server deployment in offices.The DNS-343 accommodates up to four 3.5" SATA hard drives of any capacity (HD not included). Tools or cables are not required for setup. Simply slide the front cover, insert the drives and slide the front cover back.The DNS-343 includes a USB port, for print server functionality or the monitoring of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit. It features Gigabit Ethernet connectivity with support for Jumbo frames. Its smart fans adopt a lower speed when the temperature drops below 49 °C; the drives are also able to enter a hibernation state. A built-in OLED screen updates you on drive quotes, server status, and other integral system information in real time.

Rating the DNS343 - My Observations

I have had this device connected to my network now for 3 months. I wanted to wait to review this to see what and how this device was going to perform rather than basing anything on my first impressions.
I bought this system to provide a couple of solutions, first was to have a way to provide mass storage, so that the I could consolidate all my files and records on one device, second was to provide RAID capability for backup and redundancy. Second was to have a network attached capability with gigabyte ethernet. Third was to have a web interface. Fourth, was to have a device that I could afford.
I had been using a SC101 which was OK, but was very sporadic in maintaining its connection to the network. The D-Link DNS-343 has addressed that issue and then some.
The install of the drives is exceedingly easy. Just put it in, and the system has immediate recognition. The formatting of the drive is relatively quick even for a Terabyte drive. I currently have three drives in the system of various sizes, and the system has managed them all without interruption. One thing to remember is when you are adding a drive, particularly if it is the drive has existing data on it, the data will be lost upon putting into the DNS-343 since the drive needs to be formatted before it is recognized.
The web interface is a breeze to work with and provides all the capabilities of any sophisticated server system, which was one of the primary reasons I wanted to have a Network Attached Storage system. The fact that you could designate how long you wanted the drive to remain active before going into sleep mode was another great feature. The experience that I have had is that when called upon the response has been almost instantaneous, when addressing the drive in sleep mode. The LED interface has been very helpful to see how the system is working and checking on the internals of the device. The fact that you have control from the web interface to increase and decrease the time that the LED is on is another really nice feature. The next step for me is going to be to set up a mirror drive RAID, I have some homework to do here since it appears that when you do this all the data on the drive is erased. This will mean that I will pick up a pair of drives and set them up for mirror rather than use the existing drive, and then copy overall all my data. This is a good reason for having a device that has 4 drive slots.
For those interested here is my systems configuration: I have two PCs that were built by me. The first has an AMD CPU 5600+, 4 gig of RAM, ASUS 78Pro Motherboard, ATI 9875 video card. I also have another PC that I built which has an AMD 4600+ CPU, 4 gig RAM, Gigabyte motherboard, ATI 1300 video card. The D-Link has operated admirably on both systems, as well as my daughter's laptop.
I have nothing but praise for this system, and when comparing price points for its competition, it wins hands down. If you are looking for the most affordable of the NAS devices out there, this is only device out there.

Overall good, but some significant flaws

Overall this NAS is good (not great) but has two flaws:
1. Occasionally it seems to hang. Quickest solution is to reboot the NAS but sometime waiting up to 10 minutes without accessing it seems to fix the problem. This could be my environment, but my Buffalo NAS doesn't do this.
2. [My main gripe] It seems like it sleeps much quicker than the 10 minutes I specified in the web-based control panel. Once it sleeps, it takes up to half a minute to respond to disk requests.
It suits my needs (backups), but I would avoid it if I wanted something for every day disk usage.
