Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

1-Bay SATA Network Storage Enclosure
The D-Link DNS-313 1-Bay SATA Network Storage Enclosure enables users at home to share files such as music, photos and videos across the network and on the Internet, so friends and family can access them. This device can also be used to stream music, photos and videos to UPnP Audio and Video (UPnP AV) compatible network media players*.

Convenience, Performance and Flexibility
The DNS-313 accommodates one 3.5" Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive of any capacity*. No tools or cables are required to install the hard drive, simplifying the setup process significantly. It also accepts a USB connection, to serve as Direct Attached Storage (DAS) for any computer. Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to the network is included to maximise performance when used with a Gigabit switch or Wireless N router.

Safe-file sharing locally or over the Internet
Based on the Internet Protocol (IP), the DNS-313 is not tied to any particular operating system and is suitable for use in Windows, MAC or Unix environments.
The DNS-313 includes an FTP server*, allowing files to be accessed remotely over the Internet as well as on the local network. Users and/or groups may be configured and assigned to folders with either read or read/write permissions. With access rights defined in this way, data can be kept safe.

Content streaming to a media player or iTunes software
Once music, photo and video collections have been saved on to the DNS-313 for safekeeping, the built-in UPnP AV media server may be used to stream the content to compatible media players, such as those found in D-Link's MediaLounge product line. This feature offers great levels of convenience, as it does not require a computer to be turned on.
The DNS-313 also features an iTunes Server. When enabled, the DNS-313 will be automatically detected in the iTunes program, which means the software will be able to find and play music directly from the DNS-313.

Rich software features
The product CD includes D-Link's Click'n Connect (DCC) utility, a wizard designed to guide anyone without prior technical knowledge through first time installation. Just by running the CD, users will be guided through connecting the device to the network, formatting the hard drive and mapping it on their PC.
For use at a later stage, the D-Link Easy Search Utility is also included. This utility allows users to locate the DNS-313 on the network and map the hard drive so that it will appear in "My Computer" on the PC.
Backup software is also included, the software allows users to backup their files from a computer to the DNS-313 manually, in keeping with a schedule, or in real-time. These real-time backups are an excellent way of safeguarding against unfortunate accidents that may result in the loss of important files.
The Download Scheduling feature allows you to set up scheduled folders or file downloads from an FTP or web server and thus backup sessions.
The Power Management feature allows the drives to enter a hibernation state in order to save energy and extend hard drive life.

Product Description
The DNS-6040 series Network Attached Storage is a specially designed server for workgroups and solution providers with storage area network requirements across heterogeneous Microsoft Windows NT, 2000, Novell NetWare, Apple Macintosh, and Linux clients. It's an all-in-one system that includes hardware and embedded software. A cost-effective alternative solution to traditional file servers, the DNS-6040 series provides extraordinary reliability coupled with compatibility and versatile features like easy setup, large archive space and optional redundant power supplies. The DNS-313 Single Bay Network Storage Enclosure, when used with internal SATA drives, enables you to share documents, files, and digital media such as music, photos, and video with everyone else on the home or office network. Remotely accessing files through the Internet is also possible with the built-in FTP server. Whether allowing access locally or over the Internet, keep data safe by only giving rights to specific users or groups. When configuring the DNS-313, you can create users and groups and assign them to folders with either read or read/write permissions. This is ideal for an office environment with employee-specific sensitive data or for home where children can be ensured to have access only to age-appropriate materials. Back up music, photo, and video collections to the DNS-313 for safekeeping. Then, enjoy the benefits of the built-in iTune and UPnP AV media server to stream music, video and other digital content to compatible media players. This feature is highly convenient as it allows users to turn off a computer that would normally be needed for the same function. The DNS-313 can be flexibly used as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) or a Direct-Attached Storage (DAS). As a NAS, it connects to an office or home network through a high-speed Gigabit port for shared disk access. As a DAS, it connects through a USB 2.0 port of a server or your personal laptop computer for use

2.0 out of 5 stars Good on paper, less in practice, 31 May 2008
Initially I had a pretty good impression of this item, but changed my mind later when I found out that the Power Management function actually does not work. This is a pretty important function if you plan to use this as a proper NAS : no power management means your disk will be spinning 24hrs a day unless you manually turn the DNS-313 on and off each time you need it (not what you want!). Leaving your disk on all the time will reduce its life considerably and use up power for nothing. Unfortunately D-Link are yet to release a firmware update despite having been aware of the problem for months (!). I would not have bought it if I had known about this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well...., 29 May 2008
By Mark Webb "marcos_cu" (Chorley,UK) - See all my reviews

This device does not come equipped with a hard drive and it is necessary to supply your own. D-Link offer a list on the product webpage of suitable drives although they claim it will work with 'most' SATA drives. I made the mistake of buying one which was not on the list - Samsung HD753LJ 750GB - and this did NOT work, was not recognised by the DNS-313 and had to be exchanged for a more costly one from the approved list, a Seagate ST3750640AS 750GB.

The device was supplied with v 1.00 firmware and although I believe firmware updates are available for this they are not readily to be found online and D-Link Support have yet to reply to my email about this.

Setting the device up is very simple. The hard drive slots into the DNS-313 without the need for screws, nuts or any tools. The CD based wizard walks you through formatting the drive, assigning it a drive letter and locating it on your network. It then allows you to set up the various servers it has built in - UPnP, FTP and iTunes - determined which users have access to them and to what level and to set up email alerts, power management and other functions. It will also perform unattended file downloads from websites but not 9as yet) Bittorrent downloads. There is in addition a supplied backup application but this I have not yet tested.

In use as a UPnP server to my D-Link DSM-520 media player it works very well and appears to play most file types.

It will also connect via USB directly to you computer and this is by far the quickest way of adding files to it. Trying to do so across the network is painfully slow. Equally slow is the uPnP refresh rate: it takes about 2o minutes to refresh my 750Gig drive.

The DNS-313 is in effect a small Linux computer and as such it can be modified to perform various other functions. As a new device a fully formed network of modifiers and hackers has yet to develop, but no doubt it will soon as it already has for it's bigger brother.

Anyway, in conclusion, if you are looking for a easy to set up and simple to use server for your media tracks this is certainly a good buy. Hopefully, firmware upgrades and hacks will increase its functionality still more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power down works now, 26 Feb 2009
By Robert A (Chester, UK) - See all my reviews
Pretty basic, simple thing. Put in a disk drive (check the list on D-Link website for tested compatible drives) and it just works.

Get the latest firmware update and the power down function works fine.

Suggest only using these types of drives for back-up - don't put your only copy of vital baby pictures etc on them. Drive failure can and does happen and you don't want to lose stuff you can't replac.
