First this is a very strong release. It's great to hear that an orchestra from Iceland and a English conductor with an Italian sounding name can play French music (with a Wagnerian twist) so lush and beautiful.
On second thought this release is unnecessary. That's because all important orchestral works by D'Indy are available yet in exemplary performances. Either on the EMI label and some on Naxos (France)/Marco Polo. Collectors 40+ will own these. On EMI you've the unsurpassable Pierre Dervaux recordings from the 70s and the 80s. Most of them are not digital recordings but who cares. The music is lovingly created. On Naxos France/Marco Polo some recordings from Leif Segerstam with the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinald-Pfalz. All these can be obtained on Amazon or via emusic or iTunes.
Third we really need a great recording of D'Indy's masterpiece opera Fervaal. That's music that has to be done. It's a French/Wagnerian opera of some strength. Possible the singers for this kind of work are not available.
Fourth I don't trust Chandos anymore when they state `Orchestral Works Volume 1'. They've a tendency to not completing `Complete recordings'-projects. (Only the Bax seems to go on and on and on...). Still waiting for many symphonies from Weinberg (was stated `Complete Symphonies') and Film Music vol. 1 - 3 by Dmitri Shostakovitch halted after nr.3. Hopefully they will complete their Smetana, Williamson, Leighton, Piazzolla, Berkeley, Bennett, Liszt-cycles.
Four stars because you can't blame Chandos doing their job well.
