Product Description

Product Description

This guide has been written specifically for people with little or no prior knowledge of D-Day and will serve as an ideal introduction to what can be a very daunting subject.

Written in an engaging way, this is more like an informal chat than a heavy historical text, and with short, sharp chapters this Layman's Guide provides just enough detail to gain a good grounding of knowledge and understanding, without the reader drowing in a sea of detail. That said, all of the major aspects of D-Day are covered in this book, including:

The Atlantic Wall
The role of intelligence
Operation Bodyguard
Invention and Innovation
Operation Deadstick: Pegasus Bridge
The Airborne Assualt
The Merville Battery
The invasion beaches: Utah, Omaha, Juno, Gold and Sword
Pointe du Hoc
Operation PLUTO
Mulberry harbours
The end of 'The Longest Day'
Why the Germans failed to push the invasion back into the sea

For anyone looking for an entertaining and informative overview of D-Day this Layman's Guide is the perfect place to start.

More About the Author

Scott Addington runs Military Research UK, a company specialising in uncovering family heroes and has always been fascinated by the individual stories that make up the wider picture of military history. This intrigue lead him to find out more about the men behind the medals in books such as 'For Conspicuous Gallantry...' and the soon to be published 'Britain's Bravest Soldiers - The First World War'.

As well as the personal stories, Scott is on a mission to open up whole subject of the First World War to children, teenagers and adults alike who would not necessarily read 900 page epics on the subject. His latest work, 'World War One: A Layman's Guide' is a perfect introduction to the subject and his 'The Great War 100' project of telling the story of the First World War using infographics (via an iOS/Android app and a subsequent book) has won many plaudits.

In 2009, Scott cycled the entire Western Front trench line system (550 miles) raising several thousand pounds for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal and in the spring of 2013 plans to do another ride for charity, this time even longer and more crazy than the last one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise, detailed with a dash of humour 22 May 2014
By Bomber
Format:Kindle Edition
Having read other works by the author I was eager to read his take on D Day. It didn't disappoint. Not a weighty historical account detailing each soldier involved, this gives an overview of the main parts of the invasion with enough detail to satisfy the inquisitive who could then discuss the subject. More than that though the details covered easily spark further reading and the notes and suggestions made by the author are excellent sign posts. This is a must for anyone, however knowledgeable, with any interest in D Day. The scattering of humour (I chuckled aloud during the intro to the chapter about Gold beach) is another welcome change from traditional my dry histories.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it aims to do - informs the layman. 28 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A good basic outline of a major historical event. I didn't like the inclusion of author's euphemistic terms for humorous effect as it often made light of horrific life and death situations encountered by real soldiers from either side. Could benefit from a layman's map too.Needs further proof reading as there are several spelling errors. However, an informative, easily digested book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good grounding on subject 25 Jun 2014
By Charlie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Whilst this is described as an introduction to the subject for someone with little or no prior knowledge, it is well written and not so basic as to be annoying or patronising. I wouldn't put myself in the above category but I still found this book a worthwhile read. I eventually found the conversational tone to be a little too much, but forgave this due to all the other positives. I'd really recommend it for its intended purpose. And a good selection of websites at the end to send you researching off onto the web.

A very readable account of the events leading up to and during the D Day Landings. I have a much deeper understanding of the importance of this phase of World War Two and gratitude to all those that fought to ensure our future.
