Product Description

On June 6th, 1944 the largest military invasion and defence the world has ever seen occurred. D-Day tells the epic story of the preparation and execution of the Allied invasion of Normandy. It tells the story of the defence of the Western Front by the forces of the German Empire, and of the complex and deadly secret war fought by the men and women of France and mainland Europe. D-Day brings to life the dramatic and astounding tales of courage and sacrifice, joy and despair, love and betrayal. The planning for the Allied invasion on June 6th 1944 took two years and cost thousands of lives. It involved a deception of breathtaking audacity. Both the preparation leading up to and the actions and events on the day itself relied on the absolute discretion of many and the genius and nerve of a few. D-Day examines the intricate jigsaw from both sides--presenting events through the eyes of the men and women who were there, telling their extraordinary stories. Produced by Richard Dale (The Human Body, Walking with Cavemen, Teachers), D-Day redefines the genre of drama/documentary in factual storytelling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD but why is it missing a storyline? 16 July 2004
By Matches
Wonderful Docu-Drama, with great effects on a BBC budget.Acuracy of weapons and equipment seems good as well, with excellent acting all round. However, when I watched this on the BBC over the 60th Anniversary weekend I rememeber a storyline about the Canadian involvement in the D-Day landings which is missing completley from this release. Otherwise a classic on all fronts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 18 Jun 2004
By A Customer
After The longest Day this has to be one of the best broad pictures of D Day - its mix of brilliant reconstructions and personal recolections by the veterans.... Once again the BBC has made one of the best WW2 programs ever with a relativly tiny budget - along with BBC's Dunkirk this is a masterpiece

An excellent combination of drama and documentary from the BBC. A good introduction to events leading up to and after the invasion from both the allied and axis sides.
