Product Description

Product Description

48 Royal Marine Commando began its life in March 1944 and was disbanded in the UK less than two years later in January 1946. In its short but active life it always seemed to be in the thick of the fighting. In fact, a history of 48 RM Commando is a history of the last year of the war in Europe. It participated in the D-Day invasion and landed on Juno Beach on 6 June 1944, fought as infantry in the bloody battles for Normandy, helped clear the Channel ports, undertook a second amphibious landing during the Walcheren campaign, raided across the Maas in Holland and then took part in the army of occupation in Germany. During the whole of this period it was in almost continuous contact with the enemy. It is surprising, then, that the story of 48 RM Commando has not been made available to a wider audience. Apart from a small booklet written by one of its veterans and published in 1946, it has never been the subject of a complete history of its own. Based on eyewitness accounts, official unit war diaries and published and unpublished sources and supported by a selection of maps, line drawings and archive photographs, this is an authoritative history of an elite formation.

It's all too easy to find accounts of the US units on D-Day. Omaha was a bloodbath, that can't be denied, but the Canadian beach, Juno, is an often ignored part of the battle that was equal to Omaha in intensity during the early hours of D-day. This book covers the story of 48 RM Commando, from their formation to the end of the war, including their landing on the eastern end of Juno beach just 100 yards from a German strongpoint. The unit lost all its Troop Commanders in a couple of hours and this account paints a picture of events using personal voices and narrative. The Canadians and 48 Commando really did have a terrible time on Juno and I applaud their sacrifice and this author for writing such a memorable account.

I loved this book and found it acutely interesting. The facts and details of the book I found was overwhelming and some of the script was very harrowing. My Papa was a Royal Marine Commando in the 41st regiment and this book helped me visualise a time in his life he found extremely difficult to speak about. The book made me feel proud and privledged to have been the grand-daughter of one of these brave souls and my thoughts go to all the young men who never made off those beaches. I feel it is so important the we as the future generation of Britain take time to try understand the fear and sacrifices these men and women made on our behalf and how different all our lives would have been without them. They are a generation who is slowly fading away and we have a responsibility to never forget what the did for us and for the future generations to come

Swashbuckling military history 16 Dec 2006

D-Day Commando is an immensely enjoyable account of the British 48 Marine Commando unit of D-Day. It provides detailed first-hand accounts, by way of photographs and a plethora of interview snippets, of the major battles fought by this elite unit on and following D-Day. The many maps are superb additions to the conversational battle descriptions. A swashbuckling account of some very brave and audacious yet humble gents. A great addition to any library of unconventional warfare history.
