Czar Rising is Geoffrey Sambrook's second novel, this time centred on the shady dealings of the aluminium trade in Russia. A couple of Russian toughs set out to find a willing partner to sell their product to the west making billions of dollars along the way. As their wealth builds, greed takes over and it all starts to go horribly wrong for everyone. Mr Sambrook's attention to detail and extensive knowledge of the metal trade makes for an enthralling plot with plenty of intrigue, right up to the last page. Insightful creation of colourful characters and exacting choice of locations all help to make Czar Rising a gripping read. The detailed working of an aluminimum plant and the intricate operation of the international metal markets are cleverly described in a non-technical way without detracting from the plot. Well written and realistic, you could imagine it happening today. A great book for all tastes, not just commodity and metal traders.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than a thriller novel 7 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback
Mr Sambrook has already written one successful thriller based on his international experience of the metal trade and the associated shinnanigans. This one is based on Russian involvement in the aluminum trade and is every bit as gripping as his first novel. Here he appears to give the game away right at the beginning but the novel develops into more than the story of a dubious business deals and describes a wider political (and sporting) involvement, which may explain a few things.

Well informed on the background in Russian metals in the 1990s. This is a good read even if not a literary masterpiece.
